THE OPPORTUNITY
The City is seeking a caring, enthusiastic, and dedicated Child Care Instructor I/II to provide engaging educational and recreational activities for school-age children. Under the direction of the Child Care Site Supervisor, this position helps create a safe, positive, and supportive environment while contributing to daily program operations, staff training, special activities, and program recordkeeping.

The successful candidate will demonstrate creativity, patience, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers. They will be comfortable leading age-appropriate educational, recreational, and enrichment activities, supporting daily program operations, and responding to children’s needs with sound judgment and enthusiasm. The ideal candidate is also a team player who is willing to learn, accept feedback, and contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment. For the Child Care Instructor II level, candidates should bring additional experience working with school-age children and additional college-level coursework in Early Childhood Education.
MINIMUM AND DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or equivalent and 24 Units of college coursework in Early Childhood Education (ECE or Child Development (CD), and a minimum of 6 months paid experience working with children. Child Development Permit or Children's Center Permit at the Associate Teacher level issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Certificate in Red Cross Basic first aid/CPR (may be obtained within first six months of employment).
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
- CHILD CARE INSTRUCTOR I: The Child Care Instructor I is the entry-level class in this series, in which incumbents receive orientation and training and must progress toward Instructor II classification. Must have 12 Units of college coursework in Early Childhood Education (ECE or Child Development (CD)).
- CHILD CARE INSTRUCTOR II: The Child Care Instructor II is the journey-level class in the series and requires greater experience and additional college-level units in Early Childhood Education. Must have 24 Units of college coursework in Early Childhood Education (ECE or Child Development (CD)).
IF POSITION IS AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE DIVISIONS/TEAMS:
There are three (3) vacancies in the Parks and Community Services Department. This recruitment is being conducted to fill three (3) vacancies and will establish an eligibility list, which may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur during the active status of the eligibility list.
