Highway General Laborer - Eligibility List

The Portage County Highway department is posting an eligibility list for future General Laborer vacancies as they occur. 

These positions work 4 days a week during the Spring and Summer months, so you can enjoy a 3 DAY WEEKEND!

Pay range starts at: $24.71 / hr 

Position Summary:


This position is responsible for the performance of a variety of work of the manual nature related to the maintenance and construction of roads. Work may also extend into the operating of a variety of light and medium level equipment. 


What are the primary job duties?

Road Maintenance

• Perform manual road construction and maintenance tasks.
• Perform spot road improvements which includes road patching and crack filling. 
• Deliver materials to project sites.

Roadside Maintenance

• Cut roadside grass and brush for proper vision and safe travel.
• Replace guardrails and other roadway safety features.
• Collect refuse from roadways.

Winter Maintenance

• Installation and removal of snow fence and posts.
• Perform snow and ice removal operations on state and county roads and pedestrian ways.

Miscellaneous Duties

• Perform basic equipment servicing such as greasing, fluid checks and minor adjustments with oversight.
• Assist in flagging operations and setting up traffic control zones using signage and barricades.
• Complete accurate daily records.

What are the minimum qualifications?
 

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Commercial driver’s license (CDL)-  Class B Manual or Automatic CDL with air brake endorsement or the ability to obtain Class A Manual CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six (6) months of assignment in position is required. Timeframe may be extended dependent on class schedule.
• Class A Manual CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements is strongly preferred. 
• Safe driving record is required.
• Experience working physically demanding duties.
• Experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
• Ability to obtain the following certifications:
  • Certified Flagger Training (within 6 months)
  • Traffic Incident Management (within 12 months)
  • Forklift Certified Operator (within 12 months)
  • Chainsaw Level I(within 12 months)
  • CPR (within 24 months)
•  Any combination of education and experience necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
• Must be available to maintain regular, consistent, and reliable attendance and to be available for emergency work if called seven (7) days a week, 24 hours a day.
• Ability to perform hard physical labor for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions.
