Description
Montgomery Parks — Southern Parks Division is seeking an energetic Senior Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker to join the Wheaton Management Area Trim Team. This is a stable, full-time position for entry-level maintenance professionals who enjoy outdoor work, operating equipment, and being part of a reliable crew that maintains the local parks, playgrounds, and Park Activity Buildings (PAB), ensuring the community patrons have a safe, enjoyable experience.
Under the direction of a Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader, performs skilled park and facility maintenance work supporting the upkeep of parks, trails, buildings, playgrounds, and landscaped areas. Responsibilities include grounds maintenance, trail and playground repairs, tree planting and pruning, material handling, equipment maintenance, operation of non-CDL Commission vehicles and maintenance equipment, and the use of hand and power tools to complete assigned tasks. May apply pesticides in accordance with established safety procedures and perform other related duties as assigned.

General Park, Facilities, and Ground Maintenance
- Perform routine grounds, trail, and facility maintenance to keep parks safe, clean, and accessible.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair park grounds, buildings, and amenities.
- Support seasonal operations, special projects, and the upkeep of park infrastructure.
Tree Care and Landscape Maintenance
- Perform tree planting, pruning, and landscape maintenance activities.
- Manage vegetation, brush, and debris to maintain park grounds.
- Identify and address hazardous or damaged trees and vegetation.
Playground Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair
- Conduct playground inspections to identify safety hazards and maintenance needs.
- Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs to playground equipment and amenities.
- Maintain playground surfaces and infrastructure to support safe public use.
Equipment, Vehicle, and Tool Operations
- Operate non-CDL Commission vehicles, maintenance equipment, and tools to support park maintenance and improvement projects.
- Perform routine inspection, cleaning, and preventive maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Load, transport, and store materials, supplies, and equipment to support daily operations.
Customer Service, Operational Support, Safety, and Emergency Response
- Provide customer service and support park programs, events, and visitor activities.
- Collaborate with staff to complete maintenance projects and support daily park operations.
- Follow safety procedures and respond to emergencies, severe weather, and operational needs as required.
Important Skills and Characteristics
- Knowledge of grounds, trail, landscape, facility, and custodial maintenance practices, including safety procedures, cleaning methods, and the application of pesticides and fertilizers.
- Skill in operating maintenance equipment, hand and power tools, computerized systems, and performing First Aid, CPR, and AED procedures.
- Ability to solve problems, communicate effectively, prepare routine reports, and maintain positive working relationships with team members and the public.
- Pass Commission medical examination.
- 18 years of age.
- Two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance, semi-skilled trade work (HVACR, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, carpentry).
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total two (2) years.
- Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.
Working ConditionsPrimarily works outside but may work inside on occasion or as assigned.
May work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Occasionally exposed to inclement weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy).
Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.
