The School of Art + Art History + Design has an outstanding opportunity for Instructional Technician II – Painting + Printmaking to join their team.


About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Facilities and Safety Supervisor, the Instructional Technician II – Painting + Printmaking is responsible for collaborating with program faculty and leadership to provide and maintain safe, healthy and excellent facilities for students and faculty of the University of Washington.


This is a 100 percent (40 hours per week) classified staff position. Schedule may vary dependent upon the needs of the program and the authorization of the program chair. Attendance is required at regular program meetings and some administrative meetings on campus. This position works under the general direction of the Chair of the Painting and Printmaking Program, who will collaborate with the position supervisor.


The primary function of the technician is to work in a highly collaborative manner with the supervisor, Faculty and administration to plan equipment, space, curricular support and maintain a safe environment. The technician acts as an area coordinator and may teach safe handling of equipment and materials as requested. The position also maintains the areas for cleanliness as well as safety.


The technician should work with faculty to understand the curricular objectives, and to help support Painting and Printmaking procedures as requested. Physical labor is involved in many of the tasks performed. 


The School of Art + Art History + Design is an academic department within the Division of Arts, College of Arts and Sciences and is spread over three different locations (the Art Building, the Ceramic and Metal Arts Building located on East campus and the Sand Point Studios + Gallery located at Sand Point) for a total of 139,000 square feet. The Painting + Printmaking program has facilities located on the main campus Art building and at Sand Point Studios. 


Key Responsibilities

Curricular Support - 50%

  • Prepare and use Program areas for class work projects. This may include: 
    • Setting up areas for drawing, painting, or printmaking classes including maintaining presses, moving props/furniture, maintaining rag supply 
    • Ensuring equipment, tools, solutions, and furniture are prepared for class 
    • Scheduling figure models for classes  
    • Develop and manage the equipment/material checkout system and policies 
    • Directs student staff as requested 
  • Assist with technical demonstrations in the proper use of curricular-supporting tools, materials, and equipment as requested by faculty 
  • Present brief and appropriate talks to all students on health and safety issues related to the program shops and labs as requested by faculty 
  • Estimate quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed, order equipment and supplies for projects as needed and as requested by faculty 
  • Provide training for students and faculty in program area specialties using a variety of materials, equipment and processes as requested 
  • In collaboration with faculty, monitor students in the proper and safe use of tools and equipment in the printmaking shops and painting and drawing labs
  • Provide direction to student employees as requested by program faculty 
  • Communicate University and School of Art + Art History + Design Environmental Health and Safety policies to students and implement them locally. Maintain updated knowledge of safety policies, issues and strategies 
  • Prepare Online Accident and Incident Reports as needed for local program related incidents 
  • Provide tool and equipment maintenance from consumable replacement parts to machinery repair and preventative maintenance. Request outside assistance when necessary 
  • Work on projects that support shop function, safety and security. Maintain shop and instructional areas for cleanliness as well as safety (sweep tables/floors, empty trash, store tools, maintain materials and storage) 
  • Attend scheduled program and School of Art + Art History + Design administrative meetings as requested by supervisor or program chair 
  • Perform related duties as assigned 

 

Facility Maintenance and Development - 50%

  • General upkeep and maintenance of Painting and Printmaking shops and labs 
  • Manage the changing physical needs of the space which arise due to changes in offerings and curriculum development 
  • Organize shop and lab clean-ups in collaboration with faculty
  • Work with supervisor to schedule physical plant for sink/trap clean-up, lighting issues, etc in addition to major repairs or remodeling 
  • Maintain inventory, ordering and stocking a wide variety of materials for student use and equipment maintenance as requested by program faculty and supervisor 
  • Equipment maintenance, supervision and repair including specialized Painting and Printmaking program equipment 
  • May serve as safety officer in area of responsibility as directed by supervisor, including serving on School’s Safety Team. Maintain lab safety plans and safe storage of chemicals or collaborate on this material with supervisor if not the designated safety officer in the area. 

 

Required Qualifications

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.


Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in specific instructional area OR two years of college course work in major study area AND two years experience in painting and printmaking studio work/support.
  • Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid automobile driver’s license and willingness to drive university vehicles as needed 
  • Extensive understanding of health and safety concerns specific to Painting and Printmaking processes 
  • Ability to research and implement new or innovative technical methods and ideas when necessary 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of people with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and sensitivity 
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities under pressure and remain highly adaptable to changing priorities in a high-volume academic setting 
  • Effective and efficient in organizing tasks and projects 
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new or unfamiliar technologies 
  • Working experience in a similar shop facility in an educational institution 
  • Familiarity with various approaches and materials common to printmaking, painting or drawing 
  • Basic carpentry skills

Pay Range Minimum:

$50,736.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum:

$68,052.00 annual
