King County’s Department of Assessments is looking for a dynamic and collaborative Administrative Specialist to support the Accounting Division. This position serves a vital role in meeting our mission of administratively supporting the setting fair and equitable property values, the primary service we provide to taxpayers. This role involves daily interaction with staff and the public, requiring collaborative skills, a strong grounding in administration and analytical skills, and the ability to work in a culturally and generationally diverse, team-oriented environment.

The Department of Assessments has Administrative Specialist III positions in our Accounting Division and Commercial Divisions that play a vital role in supporting our mission of ensuring fair and equitable property tax administration and valuation. These positions provide technical, administrative, and customer service support to the public, including assisting seniors and other taxpayers with exemption applications and related processes, as well as Business Personal Property. 

Successful candidates will be adaptable, detail-oriented, and able to manage a high volume of work while maintaining established production standards and deadlines. The role requires daily interaction with staff and the public and calls for strong collaboration, analytical thinking, customer service, research, and application processing skills.

The selected candidate will work a four-day-per-week schedule of 8.75 hours per day, totaling 35 hours per week.

This Career Service employment opportunity is open to all qualified candidates. In addition to filling current vacancies, this recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for future Administrative Specialist III openings within the department.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking Administrative Specialist III professionals to support operations within our Accounting and Commercial Divisions. Reporting to an Assessment Unit Supervisor or the Personal Property Unit Supervisor, these positions play a key role in providing administrative, technical, and customer service support that contributes to the department's mission of fair and equitable property tax administration.

The Administrative Specialist III is responsible for a variety of duties, including:

The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate:

  • A strong background in administrative support principles and practices, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

  • A strong customer service focus and a commitment to professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, and public service.

  • Proficiency in business productivity software and technology, with the ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office Suite, internal applications, and assessment-related systems to support daily operations.

  • Exceptional listening and organizational skills, along with the flexibility to adapt to changing business needs and quickly learn new processes, systems, and concepts.

  • A working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to property ownership, assessment administration, and physical and legal property changes.

  • The ability to process a high volume of work efficiently and accurately while meeting established production standards and deadlines.

In Addition, Qualified Candidates Will Demonstrate a Combination of Education and/or Experience That Clearly Shows the Ability to Successfully Perform the Duties of the Position, Including:

  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible office or administrative support experience, including at least two (2) years performing independent administrative or financial support duties for professional, technical, or management staff.

  • Knowledge of property assessment laws, regulations, and procedures, and the ability to interpret, apply, and explain complex information to taxpayers; or comparable experience interpreting and communicating other complex laws, regulations, or policies.

  • Two (2) years of experience using Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, as well as database systems. Experience should include creating and maintaining spreadsheets, using templates and forms, managing electronic communications, and updating records.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and manage a high-volume workload while meeting deadlines both independently and as part of a team.

  • Customer service experience responding to inquiries, resolving issues, and professionally assisting customers in challenging situations.

  • Accurate data entry and 10-key proficiency.

WORK SCHEDULE: The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Friday, 8.75 hours per day, 35 hours per week.
