Job Summary

This is a dual role job that performs the duties of both a Nursing Assistant and Monitor Tech. Assists the Registered Nurse in providing patient care based on the individualized plan of care for a patient. As delegated, performs basic nursing activities. Conducts data collection, monitors and documents patient status. Ensures confidentiality of all patient information. Utilizes safe patient handling at all times. Informs RN of activities performed observations of patients and changes in patient status. Provides a neat and clean patient environment. Observes cardiac monitors to identify abnormal heart rhythms under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Essential Functions

  • Monitor Tech

  • Observes cardiac monitors and reports any changes in cardiac rhythm per policy.

  • Receives report from the previous shift and documents strips per policy.

  • Responsible for the management and distribution of transmitter boxes. Ensures transmitter boxes are returned to the surveillance center in a timely manner after discontinuation of telemetry monitoring.

  • Reports problems regarding poor transmission, etc. to the appropriate unit and personnel.  Reports telemetry system failures to designated personnel and departments.

  • Completes telemetry summary report per policy guidelines.

  • Triages incoming phone calls, provides appropriate information in a calm and concise manner and logs phone calls.

  • Maintains adequate supplies and keeps the monitoring areas and equipment clean and organized.

  • Nursing Assistant

  • Participates in training and the continuous development of new staff. Attends educational programs, in-services and meetings as required.

  • Provides direct patient care within scope of practice as directed by providers and licensed staff in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols based on assigned facility or unit.

  • Assists patients with activities of daily living including eating, dressing, toileting, bathing and transferring.

  • Assists with admission of patients to the unit by preparing room, greeting, and orienting patient and/or family to the unit (bed, call light, phone, TV).

  • Assists with walking, turning, positioning and ambulating patient. Assists with removing and reapplying compression devices.

  • Performs data collection including vital signs, oxygen saturation, temperature, cardiac monitoring, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring systems, collection of basic/sterile specimens, and documents fluid intake and outtake.

  • Performs point of care testing as trained and delegated by RN.  Reports lab values to RN.

  • Provides patient care based as delegated by the RN on the assigned unit including, but not limited to, sterile and non-sterile soaks, application of sterile simple dressings and non-sterile simple dressings, perineal care, basic ostomy care, nasal cannula, phlebotomy, EKG's and incentive spirometry.

  • Insertion and removal of straight catheters (in & out catheters) and removal only of Foley catheters may be performed with appropriate training and clinical competency validation based on assigned unit.

  • Assists with fall prevention interventions and patient restraints as delegated.

  • Assists the patient care team with transporting patients to diagnostic studies and floor assignments.

  • Provides and documents comfort and non-pharmacological pain management measures.

  • Documents data on medical records and informs RN of activities performed, observations of patients and changes in patient status.  Charts all observations, clinical data, and procedures performed in EMR.

  • Maintains use of appropriate medical equipment and supplies. Returns equipment to other units as needed.

  • Cleans and stocks carts, rooms, hallways and kitchens. Changes linens as needed.

  • Consults with and keeps supervisor informed of unit activities, needs, and problems related to patient care.

  • Knows and follows department, unit, hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

  • Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information.

  • Helps to ensure smooth operation of the nursing unit or facility.

  • Participates in process improvement initiatives.

  • Serves as a role model and participates in educating and mentoring other members of the care team.

  • Practices safe, efficient use of supplies.

  • Attends department and organization meetings.

  • Completes annual compliance training.

  • Maintains a clean, safe, therapeutic and caring environment for patients, families, and other staff.

  • Assumes responsibility for one’s own professional development and continuing education.

  • Performs patient observer duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - HS diploma or GED. Completion of a nursing assistant, patient care tech, medical assistant, EMT, Paramedic, surgical tech, phlebotomy, military medical corpsman or nursing fundamentals course preferred.

  • Experience - no experience required.

  • Previous experience as nursing assistant, PCT, MA, EMT, Paramedic, Surgical Tech, Phlebotomist, Medical Corpsman or nursing student is preferred.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • Licensure, certification, or registration in the field of training preferred.

  • After hire, requires attendance of formal arrhythmia training class and successful completion of the Prisma Health Arrhythmia exam with a minimum passing score within 2 attempts.

  • Successful completion of the arrhythmia exam must be completed within 30 days of hire.

  • Arrhythmia competencies must be maintained on an annual basis if selected into a monitor tech role.
