Hematology Oncology Associates was established in Palm Beach County over 35 years ago, and has grown to include 10 Board Certified Hematologist and Oncologists and 6 Nurse Practitioners in 3 convenient locations within our community. Our goals are to provide state of the art cancer treatments with a high level of compassionate care in a warm inviting environment. We also specialize in treatment of coagulation blood disorders, leukemias and other hematologic benign conditions. Job Description:

  • Perform comprehensive pre-treatment and ongoing nursing assessments, including vital signs, symptoms, pain, functional status, allergies, medication reconciliation, laboratory results, treatment parameters, and changes in condition.
  • Verify provider orders, treatment plans, informed consent, laboratory values, patient identity, drug, dose, route, rate, sequencing, timing, and required independent double checks before administration.
  • Administer antineoplastic agents, immunotherapies, biologic agents, blood products, hydration, electrolyte replacement, supportive medications, injections, and other prescribed therapies within the nurse’s scope of practice and demonstrated competency.
  • Establish, access, assess, maintain, and discontinue peripheral intravenous lines and central venous access devices, including implanted ports and peripherally inserted central catheters, in accordance with policy and infection-prevention standards.
  • Monitor patients during and after treatment; recognize and promptly manage infusion reactions, hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis, extravasation, treatment-related toxicities, and other clinical emergencies according to standing orders, emergency protocols, and provider direction.
  • Provide patient and caregiver education regarding treatment, medications, possible adverse effects, symptom management, infection prevention, nutrition and hydration, when to contact the office, and when to seek emergency care; confirm understanding using appropriate teaching methods.
  • Document assessments, medication administration, vascular access care, patient education, response to treatment, communications, and follow-up accurately and promptly in the electronic health record.
  • Communicate significant assessment findings, abnormal laboratory results, changes in condition, missed treatments, medication concerns, and barriers to care to the appropriate provider and interdisciplinary team.
  • Coordinate care with pharmacy to support accurate and timely preparation, delivery, administration, and disposition of hazardous and nonhazardous medications.
  • Follow applicable safe-handling requirements for hazardous drugs and use required engineering controls, personal protective equipment, spill procedures, and waste-disposal processes.
  • Maintain emergency readiness by verifying the availability and integrity of emergency medications, equipment, supplies, and required logs; respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Support infection prevention, medication safety, quality improvement, incident reporting, patient experience, and regulatory readiness activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked treatment area; identify supply or equipment needs and report malfunctions promptly.
  • Participate in staff meetings, education, competency validation, orientation, cross-training, and other activities required by the practice.
  • Protect patient privacy and confidential information and comply with HIPAA, OSHA, and all applicable federal and state requirements and practice policies.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned
  • Travel to satellite locations and float to other offices as needed.
