What is the opportunity?
The Chief Investment Strategist (CIS) for RBC Phillips, Hager & North Investment Counsel Inc. (“PH&N IC”) will be responsible for the curation, development and monitoring of the firm’s investment platform that spans all asset classes, geographies and investment vehicles. Further, the CIS provides leadership on the PH&N IC’s firm-led investment philosophy, portfolio construction and risks management frameworks through regular communication with the Investment Counsellors and their clients.
Reporting to the President of PH&N IC, the individual will lead the development, execution, training and communication of PH&N IC’s strategic asset allocation models, and related tactical asset allocation recommendations to Investment Counsellors. The Chief Investment Strategist will act as a spokesperson for the business, and possibly at times on behalf of RBC Wealth Management Canada (WMC). What will you do?
- Provide leadership to develop strategic direction of the firm’s curated investment platform across all asset classes, geographies and investment vehicles.
- Chair the RBC PH&N Investment Committee that collectively stewards the platform via regular monitoring and product due diligence while concurrently ensuring accountability of product managers on the shelf.
- Work with key partners such as RBC Global Asset Management, Global Manager Research, and the WMC Alternatives team on the review of proprietary and sub-advised solutions.
- Develop and communicate PH&N IC’s firm led investment philosophy with respect to asset allocation, portfolio construction and risk management to drive greater consistency and risk mitigation across client portfolios.
- Formulate investment strategy opinions and recommendations for PH&N IC in conjunction with internal partners.
- Act as an ambassador for PH&N IC by cultivating strong partnerships and relationships across RBC to drive a greater understanding of our firm’s differentiated investment process, and competitive value proposition.
- Work with partners (e.g. Private Banking, Enterprise Strategic Client Group or RBC Capital Markets) to drive more holistic and comprehensive investment solutions to augment our overall offering and ultimately drive better client experiences
- Represent PH&N IC in public events and speaking engagements. The CIS will act as a spokesperson for the business, and possibly at times on behalf of RBC Wealth Management Canada on mainstream and social media outlets.
- Lead the content creation and communication of timely investment-related publications and video-recordings to Investment Counsellors and clients.
- Acts as business subject matter expert / representative on key strategic cross-enterprise initiatives / committees related to investments.
- Maintain active profile with Investment Counsellors via consistent office presence, written communication and presentations.
- Training and Development of Investment Counsellors through ongoing portfolio construction training sessions throughout the year (target 3-4x per year).
- Explore portfolio management / risk management technologies that could enhance Investment Counsellor efficiency and AUM consolidation to support PH&N IC growth targets.
- Lead by demonstrating commitment to ownership of client concerns related to portfolio / trading errors and complaints at first point of contact ensuring the escalation process for Client Problem Resolution is followed creating a differentiated client experience.
- Be highly visible as a leader across the broader PH&N IC National Office team, ensuring a high level of engagement and awareness of team strategy, priorities and successes, fostering a high performing One RBC client-centric culture. Build effective teams by actively recruiting and supporting their development through strong relationship management practices, coaching sessions, staff reviews, and performance management.
What do you need to succeed?
Must Have:
- 10+ years in a senior investment management role preferably in the PH&N IC related industry segment
- 5+ years of strong strategic and project management experience
- Extensive knowledge of public and private markets, custody solutions, investment solutions with the ability to remain current on related issues
- University degree in business, finance or economics, and CFA charterholder
- Strong conceptual thinking skills that have utilized lateral, out of the box solutions for specific business problems
- Strong knowledge of other Wealth Management products and services
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written form
- Moderate travel within the region and Canada-wide is required
Nice to Have:
- Prior experience directly with RBC / PH&N IC
- French language capability
