While some shifts will be scheduled in advance, relief Assistant Library Technicians are expected to be available to periodically accept additional shifts on short notice.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK ON OUR TEAM

The Assistant Library Technician relief position is an important part of the Juneau Public Libraries and works as the face of the library. This person can expect to be busy working with the public and library staff providing a welcoming, helpful, and safe environment. This position works at the front desk, usually with a work partner, and monitors the library during shifts. Much of the time on the desk is spent using computers to search for materials or information using our database system, the library catalog, or other electronic resources as well as referring to senior staff.

The library staff is dedicated to serving our patrons in Juneau and those around the state. We use discretion and tact when interacting with patrons and hold patron confidentiality as one of the most important elements in the public service we provide.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

The libraries are open seven (7) days a week. We have three branches: the downtown Juneau Public Library, the Mendenhall Valley Public Library, and the Douglas Public Library. Library administrative offices are located at the downtown branch.

Relief staff hours fluctuate from zero (0) - 40 hours per week, dependent upon need. This position works various shifts, from 2.5 - 5 hours in length, every day of the week between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM.

Library relief staff work varied schedules at all library branches on an as-needed basis, and attend staff meetings. Ideal candidates will be adaptable and responsive and have a flexible schedule, strong customer service, communication, and computer skills.

Responsibilities include:

  • Greeting patrons, opening library accounts, and answering general inquiries both in person and over the phone.
  • Assisting patrons in using online resources, the library catalog, and other services such as wireless internet.
  • Using discretion and tact when interacting with patrons and provide patron confidentiality as one of the central elements of public service.
  • Handling library materials from libraries across the state and can expect to assist patrons in locating library items and checking items in and out, and collecting payment.
  • Performing public-service tasks such as registering voters and selling bus passes.

Library staff employ considerable independent judgement to correct inappropriate conduct including situations with patrons who may be experiencing substance abuse or mental health issues and are potentially violent.
