Public Health Nurse - Tuberculosis (TB) Program, TB Prevention Team

Status: Regular Full Time

Salary Range: $46.00 to $54.59 per hour as per the collective agreement

Location: 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, ON L5W 1N4

Hours of work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm

The Tuberculosis Prevention Team requires enthusiastic and self-directed nurses to work within a collaborative team environment, and under medical directives, to deliver services in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards for Communicable Disease Control.

 

 

Team Specific Responsibilities:

  • Investigation and case management of reports of Latent TB Infection (LTBI)
  • Case management of new immigrants requiring medical assessments for TB including facilitation of appointments with physicians and physician consultation for assessment requirements
  • Assessment and interpretation of physician reporting forms, drug orders, radiology, and lab work to determine nursing interventions
  • Health promotion activities including health education, advocacy, resource development (fact sheets, physician/client tools, website); group facilitation and presentations of TB information to health care professionals/agencies
  • Physician Outreach activities
  • Program planning and evaluation activities
  • Policy and procedure development
  • TB clinic duties including administering and reading Tuberculin Skin Tests
  • TB skin test clinics at schools or workplaces as needed
  • Dispensing TB medications to physician offices, in TB clinics, or directly to clients
  • Developing and maintaining linkages with other health professionals and agencies (e.g. physicians, local hospitals and community health agencies)
  • Assisting the supervisor in program development

 

Team Specific Requirements:

  • One year of Tuberculosis case management (preferred) or 2-3 years of non-COVID communicable disease case management
  • Experience administering and reading TB skin tests is an asset
  • Experience developing and delivering health promotion and physician outreach
  • Clinical nursing experience in acute care or community settings
  • Experience working with marginalized communities and knowledge of the impacts to health that disproportionately affect these individuals
  • Tuberculosis screening and N-95 mask fit testing may be required in certain program areas
  • Regular travel in the community and to clinics across the Region of Peel. Candidate is required to have a G class driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

 

What you will do in this role: 

  • Apply knowledge regarding concepts of population health status, inequities in health, determinants of health, and strategies for health protection and promotion to guide practice
  • Utilize research and evidence and apply critical appraisal skills to inform policies, programs and practice
  • Provide health information, teaching and counselling to clients both in person and electronic client communication vehicles
  • Use a holistic approach to assess the health status and functional competence of clients with consideration of the impact of the determinants of health
  • Identify and analyze how clients' culture, attitudes, beliefs and feelings about health influence interventions
  • Establish mutually determined goals with client, including outcome indicators and evaluative measures
  • Facilitate client engagement in identifying and defining health issues using community development and community assessment skills
  • Participate in the planning, developing, implementation and evaluation of community wide and site specific public health strategies using Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM)
  • Advocate for and contribute to the development of healthy public policy
  • Collaborate with partners to identify and address public health issues and service gaps in order to achieve improved health outcomes
  • Develop, foster and facilitate inter-sectoral partnerships and networks using team building, negotiation, conflict management and group facilitation
  • Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches and strategies with diverse populations
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Promote awareness of the Region of Peel and Public Health services
  • Participate in research, quality assurance initiatives, and mentorship opportunities as appropriate
  • Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards and principles
  • Perform other duties as assigned which support the organizational goals

 

What the role requires: 

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized by a Canadian University
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Previous nursing experience, or public /community health nursing experience, or public health consolidation placement as part of a BScN degree is required.
  • Current certification in CPR (BLS)
  • A satisfactory Level 1 Criminal Record Check obtained directly from a police station (third-party background checks will not be accepted)

  • Demonstrated skills related to assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation (individual and Program level)
  • Experience with use of various forms of evidence to guide work (e.g. use of health status data, critical appraisal of research evidence, analysis of guidelines)
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to apply appropriate theory and learning principles to practice
  • Proficient with mobile and computer systems, applications, and relevant databases
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills including presentations, public speaking, and group facilitation (in-person and virtual environments)
  • Ability to adapt to changing work environments and contexts, including supporting emergency responses
  • Effective organization and time management skills

 

Other

  • May be required to work flexible hours including weekends, standby (on-call) and/or evening hours
  • May be redeployed to nursing work across the Public Health Department as required
  • May be required to work in and travel to multiple locations during the workday, whether that be offices, clinics, community settings, home visits etc and use of a personal vehicle for work-related purposes
  • May be required to work in office or community up to 5 days per week

Work Mode & Job Location: In this role, you’ll benefit from the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement that prioritizes meaningful in-person connection. A minimum of two days per week, up to 5 days per week on-site is expected, depending on operational needs. This arrangement allows to fulfill duties such as medication preparation, home and site visits in the community, and participation in the Brampton Civic Hospital TB clinic.

 

It's important to note that your off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario. This ensures that we're compliant with all regulations and policies.The Region of Peel offers job based flexible hours of work that allows employees to manage personal and professional responsibilities while at the same time ensures business operational needs and customer service expectations are achieved. Flexibility is required to accommodate home and community visits; earlier or later shifts as required.
