Description

HEAD OF OFFLINE SALES – TANZANIA

Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Employment Type: Full-time
Salary: USD 2,000 – 2,700 per month
Application Deadline: 17 July 2026

About the Company

Our client is a leading African online marketplace connecting millions of buyers and sellers across the continent.

As the business expands its offline presence in Tanzania, they are looking for an experienced sales leader to build and scale a high-performing offline sales operation from the ground up.

This is a unique 0-to-1 leadership opportunity for someone who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys working directly in the market, and has previously built sales teams, territories, or channels from scratch.

About the Role

The Head of Offline Sales – Tanzania will be the first employee on the ground and will be responsible for building the company's offline sales operation from zero.

There is currently no established team, office, or sales process. You will recruit the first sales agents, work alongside them in the field, establish sales routines and targets, develop reporting systems, and create a repeatable sales model that can eventually be scaled into additional territories and cities.

This is a hands-on leadership role. In the early months, you will spend significant time in key commercial areas of Dar es Salaam, including Kariakoo and Ilala, understanding merchants, testing the sales proposition, closing the first customers, and determining what works before scaling the model.

You will work closely with the COO and have significant influence over the strategy, structure, and growth of the offline sales function in Tanzania.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and lead the offline sales operation from 0-to-1: Recruit, train, manage, and develop sales agents, establish territories, define daily and weekly targets, and build a high-performance sales culture.
  • Develop the sales process and operating system: Create the end-to-end process for prospecting, pitching, onboarding, and retaining sellers, including reporting, performance tracking, quality controls, and sales routines.
  • Lead from the front: Personally spend time in the field, acquire the first sellers, test sales pitches and acquisition channels, understand merchant behaviour, and establish what works before scaling it across the team.
  • Drive sales performance: Set and manage targets, monitor conversion, productivity, cost per sale, and revenue, identify underperformance quickly, and implement coaching or corrective actions.
  • Build a scalable sales model: Identify the highest-performing seller segments and territories, develop effective commission and incentive structures, and continuously improve recruitment, productivity, and retention.
  • Scale the organisation: Grow the team, develop team leads, expand across Dar es Salaam, and prepare the business for expansion into additional cities.
  • Build a repeatable playbook: Document successful processes, sales practices, training methods, reporting structures, and market insights so the model can be replicated in new territories.
  • Manage stakeholders and reporting: Work closely with the COO and internal teams, provide accurate and transparent performance updates, communicate challenges and opportunities, and use data and market feedback to drive decisions.

What Success Looks Like

  • A sustainable and growing offline sales revenue stream.
  • A high-performing sales team where the majority of agents consistently deliver results.
  • Strong agent recruitment, retention, training, and development processes.
  • Accurate reporting and performance tracking that enables fast decision-making.
  • A repeatable sales model that can be successfully implemented in new territories and cities.
  • A growing pipeline of sellers generated through field sales, referrals, and repeatable acquisition channels.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of sales experience, including at least 2 years in a sales leadership role.
  • Proven experience building a sales team, territory, channel, or operation from zero rather than only managing an established operation.
  • Strong field sales experience in Tanzania.
  • Deep knowledge of Dar es Salaam's key commercial and trade areas, including Kariakoo and Ilala.
  • Experience recruiting, training, motivating, and managing commission-based sales agents.
  • Strong understanding of sales-agent productivity, motivation, and retention.
  • Experience in FMCG, telecoms, fintech, digital services, e-commerce, marketplaces, or another field-sales-driven business.
  • Strong commercial and analytical skills, with experience managing targets, conversion rates, cost per sale, and productivity metrics.
  • Fluent in Swahili and English.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, negotiation, and communication skills.

How You Work

  • You build quickly and prioritise execution over excessive planning.
  • You are comfortable creating structure where none exists and turning an early-stage operation into a repeatable sales model.
  • You are willing to personally do the work before delegating it, especially in the first few months.
  • You enjoy spending time in the market and understand how merchants and customers behave.
  • You use data and numbers to manage targets, conversion, productivity, cost per sale, and revenue.
  • You can operate independently without constant direction and are comfortable working without an established office or team.
  • You take ownership of results and are transparent about both successes and failures.
  • You test, learn, and adapt quickly rather than waiting for perfect conditions.
  • You are expected to build the initial sales operation in the first three months, reach approximately 50 active sellers, grow to 100 by Month 6, and scale to approximately 200 active sellers by Month 12.
  • You are motivated by the opportunity to build a team, establish a proven sales model, and scale it across Dar es Salaam and eventually into other cities.

What the Company Offers

  • Monthly salary of USD 2,000 – 2,700, plus performance-based incentives.
  • Direct access to the COO and fast decision-making.
  • Marketing support and budget.
  • Access to existing online demand and an established marketplace platform.
  • Support from international teams across product, analytics, and reporting.
  • Significant opportunity to build and lead a much larger sales organisation as the Tanzania business grows.
  • The opportunity to own and build a true 0-to-1 market expansion operation.
