The Provo City Solid Waste Management division is hiring a full-time Compost Yard Attendant to handle all aspects of compost yard operations. This position is responsible for operations, customer assistance, and record management at the compost yard. What is the compensation package?

Pay Rate: (G23) $22.44 - $33.31 per hour (depending on experience)

What are the main duties?

  • Operate loaders, grinders, trommel screens, compost turners, and other yard equipment to receive and process green waste, turn compost, and load finished compost into customer vehicles.

  • Greet customers, explain yard procedures and proper compost use, answer questions, sell compost, and process credit and debit card payments.

  • Verify municipal residency and prevent unauthorized use of the compost yard by landscapers, developers, contractors, and other ineligible users.

  • Inspect incoming loads, estimate and record the type and volume of yard waste, reject contaminated or unapproved materials, and direct customers to another facility when needed.

  • Help customers unload materials and maintain safe traffic and service areas throughout the compost yard.

  • Monitor compost windrows each day; record temperatures and turn or adjust the material as needed to maintain proper oxygen, moisture, and temperature.

  • Clean, inspect, maintain, and repair tools, containers, machinery, and compost equipment, including welding and fabricating replacement parts when needed.

  • Identify unsafe conditions, fires, equipment problems, accidents, injuries, and property damage; stop work when necessary and report issues immediately to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Maintain accurate yard records, operating logs, sales files, and required regulatory forms.

  • Follow all safety, operating, and environmental requirements and assist other municipal solid waste staff with related duties as assigned.

 

What are the minimum requirements?

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Any combination of education or experience that demonstrates an ability to perform courteous customer service, proper recordkeeping, and heavy equipment operation.

  • Must have physical strength and agility enough to perform the work, ability to follow directions, and be able to effectively communicate.

  • Knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and equipment.

  • A valid, lawful Driver License.

  • Front loader experience and/or possession of a Commercial Driver License preferred.

  • Forklift Certification required within 6 months of hire.

  • Composting, landscaping, or gardening experience preferred.

 

What is the selection process?

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on August 31, 2026. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

 

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
