Sergeant – Criminal Investigations - Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office

The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional to serve as Sergeant of the Criminal Investigations Division (CID).

This position combines hands-on criminal investigations with leadership, supervision, and operational responsibility. The Sergeant – CID works alongside detectives investigating complex criminal matters while also serving as a resource, mentor, and supervisor to personnel within the division.

From coordinating major crime scenes and reviewing investigations to developing detectives and providing leadership during high-risk incidents, this role provides an opportunity to make an impact on both the cases we investigate and the people behind the work.

The Sergeant – CID is more than an experienced investigator. This position is an important leadership resource within the Sheriff’s Office.

In the absence of the Lieutenant of Criminal Investigations, the Sergeant assumes additional responsibility for CID operations, including supervision of detectives and oversight responsibilities involving Court Services/Civil Process and MEG Unit personnel through the MEG Supervisor.

The successful candidate will be someone others can turn to for guidance—an experienced professional who can make sound decisions under pressure, hold others accountable, develop employees, and still step into an investigation when needed. 

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Conduct and coordinate criminal investigations, including interviews, search warrants, evidence collection, arrests, and case preparation.
• Take charge of crime scenes and coordinate the identification, preservation, collection, and processing of evidence.
• Supervise investigative activities and provide guidance, direction, and constructive review to detectives.
• Review reports and investigative work to promote thorough, accurate, and professional case preparation.
• Coordinate witnesses, suspects, investigative resources, and follow-up activities during complex cases.
• Work closely with the District Attorney’s Office, other law enforcement agencies, County departments, and community partners.
• Testify in court and ensure investigative documentation supports successful case review and prosecution.
• Conduct or oversee specialized investigations, including employee misconduct investigations when assigned.
• Assist with scheduling, assignments, performance evaluations, disciplinary matters, training, and other supervisory responsibilities.
• Serve as Officer in Charge during assigned high-risk incidents, including SWAT responses, natural disasters, hazardous-material incidents, and other critical events.
• Assist with Court Services/Civil Process and other Sheriff’s Office operations as needed.
• Support the Lieutenant – CID with division operations, budgeting, planning, and administration.

• Minimum two-year Associate degree in Criminal Justice or an equivalent combination of relevant work experience.
• Minimum three years of experience at the rank of Detective/Sergeant or above.
• Demonstrated investigative knowledge and sound decision-making skills.
• Ability to effectively supervise, coach, and develop personnel.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team.
• Ability to effectively interact with the District Attorney’s Office, media, other law enforcement agencies, and the public.
• Ability to remain composed and provide leadership during stressful, complex, and high-risk situations.
• Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, accountability, and strong working relationships.
• Working knowledge of digital evidence and experience with the collection, preservation, review, or management of digital evidence is desired, but not required.
