Description
Scientific Data Engineer
Location: London (On-site) | Type: Permanent, Full-Time | Sector: R&D Data Science, Biopharma Confidential Search — handled by Joynes & Hunt
About the Opportunity
Our client is a growing biopharmaceutical business investing heavily in digitalisation across its R&D function. They're looking for a Scientific Data Engineer to join their Data Science team, splitting time between hands-on data analysis and the tools that make good data analysis possible in the first place.
This is a confidential search — the identity of our client will be shared with shortlisted candidates ahead of interview.
The Role
You'll build and maintain the data models, pipelines and dashboards that underpin R&D activity — from lab notebook templates through to results processing and statistical analysis — while also acting as a go-to technical resource for scientists across the organisation.
Day to day, you'll:
- Write well-documented, well-tested electronic lab notebook (ELN) templates that follow best practice
- Build tools that safeguard data integrity throughout the data lifecycle
- Develop SQL queries and dashboards that make data more accessible across scientific and operational teams
- Carry out data mining, exploration and feature engineering to support proof-of-concept AI/ML, statistical, mechanistic and hybrid modelling work, working closely with data scientists and bench scientists
- Provide day-to-day technical support and training for tools and software used across R&D
- Produce clear, thorough documentation of your development work
- Keep your knowledge of modern data analysis practice current, particularly as it applies to life sciences R&D
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- A BS/MS in Data Science, Data Analysis, Bioprocess Engineering or a related discipline
- An understanding of bioprocessing, or hands-on experience working with bioprocess development data
- Strong Python and SQL skills
Desirable:
- Prior industry experience maintaining ELNs within a pharmaceutical setting (internships/placements count)
- Experience developing software, databases, or bioprocess models
- Familiarity with dashboarding tools such as Tableau, Spotfire or Power BI
