Description

Excited to grow your career?

BBVA is a global company with more than 160 years of history that operates in more than 25 countries where we serve more than 80 million customers. We are more than 121,000 professionals working in multidisciplinary teams with profiles as diverse as financiers, legal experts, data scientists, developers, engineers and designers.

About the job:

Overview:

Top European Bank with a strong and growing U.S. presence is seeking a highly experienced Senior Vice President (“SVP”) withing the Global Risk Management (“GRM”) unit. The SVP represents one of the Bank's principal credit adjudication roles and is expected to exercise independent credit judgment across a broad range of corporate banking products, industries, and transaction structures.

The GRM unit is responsible for the independent underwriting of corporate clients, evaluating both counterparties and individual transactions prior to approval, while maintaining ongoing responsibility for monitoring portfolio risk throughout the life of each client relationship through periodic reviews, amendments, waivers, restructurings, and continuous assessment of evolving credit conditions.

Consistent with the Bank's relationship-driven corporate banking model, the team underwrites all credit exposures arising from corporate client relationships rather than specializing in a single product. Accordingly, SPVs are expected to evaluate a broad range of financing and risk products and possess the versatility to support clients across multiple industry sectors as business needs evolve.

This position requires a seasoned credit professional with 10-20 years of experience capable of independently underwriting complex corporate borrowers, assessing transaction structures, interpreting legal documentation, and presenting well-supported recommendations to credit committees. Successful candidates should be able to transition across industry sectors as portfolio and business priorities require while maintaining consistent underwriting standards and sound credit judgment.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the independent underwriting and credit assessment of corporate clients across the full spectrum of relationship banking products, including cash flow-based corporate lending, revolving credit facilities, acquisition and leveraged finance, trade finance, structured finance, equipment finance, leasing structures, derivative transactions, and asset-based or borrowing base facilities, as applicable.
  • Evaluate complex transaction structures by assessing repayment capacity, collateral, legal structure, counterparty risk, and transaction-specific risks to determine overall creditworthiness.
  • Perform comprehensive financial analysis, including historical performance, projected cash flows, liquidity, leverage, covenant capacity, sensitivity analyses, and downside stress scenarios.
  • Review, interpret, and assess transaction documentation, including credit agreements, security documents, borrowing base provisions, trade finance documentation, leasing agreements, intercreditor agreements, ISDA Master Agreements, CSA documentation, guarantees, and other legal agreements relevant to the transaction structure.
  • Present independent credit recommendations and risk opinions to senior management and Credit Committees, exercising sound judgment on complex and material credit decisions.
  • Manage an assigned portfolio through ongoing monitoring, annual reviews, amendments, restructurings, waivers, and early identification of emerging credit risks.
  • Collaborate closely with Relationship Managers, Product Specialists, Legal, Operations, and other stakeholders to ensure timely execution while maintaining independent credit judgment.
  • Support underwriting needs across industry sectors as business priorities evolve and demonstrate the flexibility to assume responsibility for new sectors or portfolios.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of credit processes, underwriting standards, and portfolio risk management practices.

Qualifications:

  • 10–20 years of progressive experience in credit risk management, with a strong focus on corporate and structured finance within a corporate or commercial banking environment.
  • Deep expertise in credit underwriting, financial analysis, and risk assessment across complex structures and products.
  • Strong working knowledge of loan documentation, trade finance instruments, and ISDA agreements.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound risk decisions in high-value, complex transactions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate risk positions clearly to senior stakeholders and credit committees.
  • Strong understanding of corporate banking policies, procedures, governance frameworks, and approval processes, including U.S. lending regulations.
  • Track record of building effective relationships with internal partners, peers, and external stakeholders to deliver timely, high-quality credit decisions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA preferred but not required.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
