What Our Experienced Veterinary Assistants Do
As a Veterinary Assistant at Fountain Valley Animal Hospital, you’ll be an important member of our clinical team, supporting our veterinarians, caring for patients, communicating with clients, and helping keep each day running smoothly.
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and medical procedures
- Provide compassionate, attentive patient care
- Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian
- Perform venipuncture and diagnostic sample collection based on experience and training
- Assist with catheter placement and fluid therapy
- Obtain high-quality diagnostic radiographs and maintain imaging standards
- Perform in-house laboratory testing, including CBC/chemistry, urinalysis, cytology, and fecal testing
- Support surgical procedures, including patient preparation, monitoring, recovery, and instrument care
- Assist with dental procedures and patient monitoring
- Safely and compassionately handle and restrain patients
- Obtain patient histories and accurately document medical information
- Maintain accurate and thorough medical records and patient charts
- Educate and communicate with clients about patient care, medications, discharge instructions, and preventive healthcare
- Maintain clean, organized, stocked, and efficient treatment and exam areas
- Collaborate with veterinarians and teammates to maintain an efficient daily workflow
- Jump in where needed to support patients, clients, and coworkers
What You’ll Bring
We’re looking for an experienced Veterinary Assistant who combines strong technical skills with compassion, communication, reliability, and a team-first attitude.
- Previous hands-on Veterinary Assistant experience
- Confidence with safe and compassionate patient handling and restraint
- Experience assisting veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and procedures
- Experience with venipuncture and diagnostic sample collection
- Familiarity with IV catheter placement and fluid therapy
- Experience obtaining diagnostic radiographs
- Familiarity with in-house laboratory testing and sample preparation
- Experience supporting surgical and dental procedures
- Strong patient-monitoring and nursing-care skills
- Excellent client-service and communication skills
- Ability to clearly reinforce veterinarian recommendations and discharge instructions
- Strong attention to detail and accurate medical recordkeeping
- Ability to stay organized and multitask in a busy veterinary environment
- Dependability, adaptability, and professionalism
- A positive and collaborative approach to teamwork
- Willingness to ask questions, share knowledge, and continue learning
- A genuine passion for veterinary medicine and high-quality patient care
