Eos is at the forefront of developing advanced embedded solutions for energy storage and management. The Manager of Embedded Software Engineering will lead a team of talented engineers in designing, developing, and optimizing firmware for Battery Management Systems (BMS) tailored to the Eos battery technologies, ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance with industry standards such as UL 1998, UL 60730 Annex H, etc.

The Manager of Embedded Software Engineering is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, technical execution, and team performance in the development of embedded firmware for the Eos BMS. This role involves managing a team of engineers using the V-model of software design, driving safety-critical compliance with UL 60730 Annex H, and ensuring seamless integration of firmware with hardware components like STM32 microcontrollers, CAN/CANFD, RS-485 protocols, ADC-s, etc.

Responsibilities

• Lead Firmware Development for BMS: Oversee the design, documentation, development, and maintenance of embedded firmware for generations of Eos Battery Management Systems, ensuring adherence to the V-model and compliance with UL 60730 Annex H functional safety standards. 

• Team Management: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of embedded software engineers, setting performance goals, allocating resources, and fostering a collaborative, innovative environment. 

• Drive Safety and Compliance: Ensure the implementation of diagnostics, fail-safe mechanisms, and safety features (e.g., overvoltage/undervoltage protection, electrolyte monitoring) in BMS firmware, aligning with UL 60730 Annex H requirements. 

• Strategic Oversight of Communication Protocols: Guide the team in designing and implementing communication interfaces (e.g., CAN/CANFD, RS-485, I2C) for real-time data transmission and control of battery systems. 

• Collaborate on Hardware-Software Integration: Partner with electronics engineering leads to ensure robust integration of firmware with BMS hardware, including sensors, ADCs, and power electronics, while overseeing validation and performance testing. 

• Hardware-Software Integration: Collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure proper integration of firmware with BMS hardware components, including sensors, and power electronics, conducting safety validation and performance testing.

• Process Improvement: Develop and refine embedded software engineering processes to enhance efficiency, reliability, and scalability of BMS development. 

• Documentation and Standards: Oversee the creation of comprehensive technical documentation (e.g., design specifications, test plans, compliance reports) and ensure traceability and quality per V-model methodologies. 

• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with other departments (e.g., product management, etc.) to align embedded software efforts with company goals and support troubleshooting tools and commissioning processes. 

• Roadmap Development: Contribute to the strategic planning of future BMS product features and enhancements, aligning with Eos’ clean energy mission. 

• Ensure a safe work environment by following health and safety guidelines and policies.

• Root Cause Analysis: Lead investigations into firmware-related failures, implementing corrective actions to improve system reliability.

• Champion a culture of continuous learning by staying updated on advancements in BMS design, microcontroller platforms, and safety standards.

​Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Leadership Expertise: Proven ability to lead and inspire a team of embedded software engineers, balancing technical guidance with managerial oversight. 

• Technical Proficiency: Strong background in C/C++ for embedded systems, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and microcontroller-based development (e.g., STM32 family). 

• Safety Standards Knowledge: Deep understanding of IEC 60730 Annex H and its application to safety-critical embedded systems. 

• Communication Protocols: Expertise in CAN bus, CANFD, RS-485, SPI, I2C, and other protocols relevant to battery systems. 

• Problem-Solving: Exceptional ability to troubleshoot complex software and hardware integration issues and implement scalable solutions. 

• Project Management: Skilled in managing timelines, resources, and deliverables in a fast-paced engineering environment. 

• Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and clearly articulate technical concepts.

• Knowledge of embedded security practices (e.g., secure bootloaders, encryption).

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field required.

• Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field preferred.

• Minimum of 8 years' experience.

Travel

• Local Travel: Less than 10%

• Overnight/North America: Less than 10%

Working Conditions

• Office Environment - Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.  Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. May be required to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

• Factory - The worker may be subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, vibration, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to temperature changes or exposure to chemicals.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, odors, dust, mists, and gases. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and lab coats. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

• Customer/Partner Locations – Employee may visit customer or partner locations that may be comprised of office, manufacturing floor, laboratory environments and construction sites depending on the location and reason for visit.
