Part-Time Firefighter

Firefighters will provide skilled firefighting work and emergency medical treatment. This work will consist of combating fires, extinguishing fires, preventing fires, providing skilled emergency medical treatment, and responsibility for the operation and maintenance of all Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and quarters.

• Shall train for and participate in the protection of life and property through firefighting and rescue activities, usually under close supervision.
• Shall participate in the operation of apparatus and the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions requiring strenuous exertion in smoke and cramped surroundings.
• Firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult and responsible areas of activity. The major portion of time is spent drilling and studying the methods and techniques used to deliver our service to the community. Additionally, much time is spent in routine duties in the care and maintenance of Fire Department property and equipment.
• Attends periodic training classes to learn of new or revised regulations and policies; notifies superior of the need for vehicle maintenance.
• Shall demonstrate initiative and thorough individual understanding of firefighting methods and related work.
• Shall be certified and function as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Firefighter Two (FFII).
• Shall communicate to their superior and to co-workers all information they may obtain which is pertinent to the achievement of objectives.
• Shall conduct themselves in accordance with high ethical standards, both on and off duty.
• Shall assist in the execution of the Fire Department mission.
• Give emergency medical treatment following department EMS protocols.
• Transport sick or injured persons.
• Give lectures and tours to service groups, clubs, etc.
• Assist in inventory of all fire department supplies and equipment.
• Follow orders (oral and written instructions) in accordance with department chain of command.

• Age 18.
• Must be able to understand and carry out instructions; to meet and deal with the public and to get along with others, good, judgment, and ability to keep records and prepare reports.
• Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights.
• Ability to learn a wide variety of firefighting duties and methods within the probationary period.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, City officials, and the general public.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Must pass pre-employment background check.
• Must pass pre-employment drug screen.
• Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license.
• Any combination of experience and education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
• Must be certified as an EMT by the state of Ohio.
• Must be certified as a FFII by the state of Ohio.
• Must maintain state certification as EMT and FFII for entire time of employment.
• Knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City and serviced townships.
• Ability to write and speak effectively.
• Must be able to work on shifts; must be able to work outside during periods of inclement weather.
• For initial appointment, the candidate must have successfully completed approved Firefighter's Agility test within the past year.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

• Any combination of training, certifications, and experience that would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above including Ohio Advanced EMT and Paramedic.
