Description of Work

The Summer Internship Program offers college students in good academic standing the opportunity to learn about the work performed at NCDOT and to gain valuable exposure. There will be opportunities to work in a number of units across the state, with placement based on the student’s preferences and Department needs. Job duties will vary by assignment.

Work Session: May 10th through August 6th

Main Assignments Available: Aviation, Bicycle and Pedestrian, Civil Rights, Communications, Construction, Contracts and Standards, Environmental Analysis, Fiscal, Geotechnical, Hydraulics, Human Resources, Location & Surveys, Maintenance, Materials & Tests, Photogrammetry, Project Development, Public Transportation, Rail, Right of Way, Roadside Environmental, Roadway Design, Structures Management, Traffic Management, Traffic Safety, Transportation Systems Management & Operations, Transportation Planning, Utilities. Most of these units are based in Raleigh. Construction, Maintenance and Project Development are functions of our fourteen Highway Divisions.

Positions are located statewide. Job locations depend on Department needs and current projects. Therefore, applicants must specify desired job location in the supplemental questions section. Please reference this map of our divisions when indicating location preferences. Receiving location preference is not guaranteed.

Candidates that are selected will be responsible for their own housing and moving expenses.

Eligibility Requirements

• Must be a currently enrolled student in an associates, bachelors, or masters level program at an accredited institution upon employment
• Minimum overall GPA of 2.3 (based on 4.0 scale)
• Must demonstrate GPA by attaching a transcript

Minimum Education and Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Minimum overall GPA of 2.3 on a 4.0 scale.  Has completed 24 credit hours and is currently enrolled at an accredited institution.
