Description

Chief Operating Officer / Group Administrator

Large Independent Pathology Group | Remote

A large, well-established independent pathology group is seeking an experienced Chief Operating Officer / Group Administrator to lead the organization’s administrative and business operations.

Reporting directly to the President, this executive will work closely with physician owners and practice leadership to support the group’s continued operational and financial success. Although this position does not directly manage the pathologists, the successful candidate must be comfortable collaborating with physicians and operating within a physician-owned governance structure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the group’s administrative and business operations
  • Support physician leadership with strategic planning and organizational decision-making
  • Develop and manage operating budgets, financial reporting, and long-range financial plans
  • Coordinate with external tax accountants, legal counsel, financial institutions, and other professional advisors
  • Oversee physician, hospital, payer, vendor, and other business contracts
  • Provide oversight of the organization’s 401(k) plan and third-party administrator relationships
  • Support business development and evaluate growth opportunities
  • Oversee real estate, insurance, banking, and general corporate administration
  • Maintain productive relationships with hospitals and other healthcare partners
  • Provide executive leadership to the teams responsible for:
    • Human resources
    • Payroll
    • Credentialing
    • Information technology
    • Laboratory operations
    • Data analysis
    • Accounting

Candidate Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Business Management, or a related discipline preferred
  • At least seven years of senior administrative or operational leadership experience within an independent physician group, commercial medical practice, or similar privately operated healthcare organization
  • Experience in anatomic pathology, radiology, or another physician-led medical specialty is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with physicians, including physician owners, partners, and practice leaders
  • Strong financial acumen, including budget development, financial reporting, coordination with tax accountants, and 401(k)/TPA oversight
  • Experience with strategic planning, contract management, credentialing, hospital relationships, revenue-cycle oversight, and vendor negotiations
  • Strong leadership and team-management capabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Comfortable using current business technology and management systems

Ideal Candidate Background

The strongest candidates will have led the business and administrative operations of an independent pathology group, radiology group, multispecialty practice, or other privately operated medical organization.

Candidates should understand the dynamics of supporting physician owners and balancing the needs of the medical practice, its employees, hospital partners, and other stakeholders. Experience working in an entrepreneurial, privately operated, or commercially focused healthcare environment is particularly valuable.

Candidates whose experience is primarily limited to hospital-owned or health-system-employed physician groups may be less likely to have the financial, ownership, and entrepreneurial experience required for this position.

Work Arrangement

This is a remote position. The successful candidate will spend the first few weeks onsite in Southern California for training, orientation, and relationship development. After the initial onboarding period, the executive will work remotely with occasional travel to California, anticipated to be approximately once per quarter.

Compensation

The anticipated compensation range is $190,000–$250,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
