Bon Secours Health System has a rich history in Limerick, beginning with the acquisition of Barringtons Hospital on George’s Quay in 2017. While the site has served the community well, its limitations led to our vision for a new, state-of-the-art facility to better serve the growing healthcare needs of the region.

In 2021, we took the next step towards this vision by breaking ground on the new Bon Secours Hospital Limerick in Towlerton, Ballysimon, with an investment of €190 million. This new hospital is now open and provides advanced medical and surgical care in a modern, sustainable setting.

Staff Nurse– Ophthalmology

Full-time (37.5 hours per week) | Specified Purpose Contract

The Purpose of This Role:

To work according to the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics (NMBI 2021) as amended or updated and relevant professional guidelines and take responsibility for a defined group of patients within the area Ophthalmology.

Candidate Criteria:

Qualifications:

• Be registered, or be eligible for registration, in the General Nurse Division of the Register of Nurses kept by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI]
• Desirable Post Graduate Clinical Qualification in Ophthalmology

Key Responsibilities:

• Be responsible for the safe care of patients from initial consultation to pre assessment and discharge, liaising with the Consultants, Nursing Staff and all other health care professionals and support services
• Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the ophthalmology patients utilising medical assessments and performing technical diagnostics to determine patient needs.
• Communicate results of assessments, treatment / care programmes and recommendations to the team and relevant others in accordance with service policy / as required.
• To ensure safe, comprehensive patient care to service users within the guidelines of the BSHS policies, procedures, and guidelines along with the relevant professional guidelines e.g. Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland.
• Collaborate with service users, family, carers, and other staff in treatment / care planning and in the provision of support and advice.
• Ensure that service users and others are treated with dignity and respect.
• Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics, and legislation.
• To work in compliance with the Scope of Practice.
• Promote patient focussed approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health agencies.
• Educate patients and their carer as required when a need is identified by self or others.
• Be familiar with the specific care requirements for the clinical speciality.
• Follow up identified patient post discharge.
• Liaise with Consultants regarding any clinical complications / concerns
• Complete patient documentation fully and correctly, ensuring legible in line with hospital policy.
• Maintain a safe clinical environment.
• Assist in establishing and monitoring care protocols/pathways.

Essential Requirements:

• R.G.N Registration
• 2 years post-registration experience in an acute hospital ideally Ophthalmology
• Excellent interpersonal, leadership, accountability and communication skills
• Knowledge of nursing guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols.
• Broad based knowledge of current nursing research issues pertinent to practice.
• Experience of clinical audit and standard setting.
