Salary: $100,000 – $130,000 CAD per year (commensurate with experience)
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Building Automation Systems (BAS) Engineer to join our team, supporting the design, programming, commissioning, and optimization of building automation and control systems across commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities in the Greater Toronto Area. This role is ideal for a technically skilled professional who thrives on solving complex control challenges and improving building performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, engineer, and program building automation systems (BAS/BMS) including HVAC, lighting, life safety interlocks, and energy management systems
- Develop control sequences of operation, points lists, and system architecture drawings
- Configure, commission, and troubleshoot DDC controllers, sensors, and field devices (e.g., Niagara/Tridium, Distech, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Delta, Schneider Electric, or similar platforms)
- Conduct on-site system startup, testing, and commissioning to ensure systems meet design intent and performance specifications
- Perform system diagnostics, troubleshooting, and optimization to resolve performance issues and improve energy efficiency
- Develop and configure graphics, alarms, trends, and reporting dashboards for building operators
- Collaborate with mechanical/electrical engineers, contractors, and project managers throughout project lifecycles
- Provide technical support and training to building operations staff and clients
- Prepare technical documentation, as-built drawings, and sequence of operations manuals
- Travel to various job sites across the GTA to support installation, commissioning, service, and client meetings
- Ensure all work complies with applicable codes, standards, and safety regulations (ASHRAE, CSA, ESA, etc.)
- Support energy audits and retro-commissioning initiatives as needed
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience in building automation systems engineering, programming, or commissioning
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent industry experience)
- Proven experience with one or more major BAS platforms (e.g., Niagara N4/Tridium, Distech Controls, Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens Desigo, Honeywell, Delta Controls, Schneider Electric)
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, mechanical/electrical building systems, and control theory
- Experience developing and troubleshooting DDC programming and control logic
- Working knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, LON, and other building automation communication protocols
- Valid G driver's license and willingness to travel within the GTA as required
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical drawings and specifications
Preferred / Assets:
- Niagara N4 Certification or equivalent platform certification
- Experience with energy management, fault detection & diagnostics (FDD), or LEED/building certification projects
- Familiarity with IT networking as it relates to BAS (VLANs, IP addressing, cybersecurity basics)
- Project management experience or PMP designation
- Membership or working toward P.Eng. designation is an asset
