The Team
The Japan Investment Management Operations (IMOps) team supports PIMCO’s Tokkin and pension account structures within Japanese Trust Bank frameworks.The team serves as a key operational interface across Account Management, Portfolio Management / Trade Support, and global teams, while closely coordinating with trust banks, custodians, brokers, and external service providers.The team is responsible for maintaining operational stability, managing operational risk, supporting business growth initiatives, and facilitating regulatory and market practice changes.
The Role
The Japan IMOps Manager leads the Tokyo IMOps team and provides operational leadership across Japanese trust bank structures supporting Tokkin and pension account operations.
The role provides operational leadership across trade lifecycle oversight, cash and collateral management, stakeholder coordination, risk management, and strategic, regulatory and market practice initiatives.
Acting as a key coordination point between Japan and global teams, the role ensures effective operational execution while balancing local market requirements with global standards and operating objectives.
The position requires strong judgment, stakeholder management, and the ability to lead operational delivery within a complex and highly constrained environment.
Core responsibilities include:
Core Operational
- Manage Japan IMOps operational activities across Japanese trust bank structures, including Tokkin and pension accounts
- Manage trade lifecycle processes, settlement monitoring, cash and collateral management, and operational support functions
- Maintain operational stability across complex local operational structures and external service provider models
Stakeholder Coordination
- Coordinate closely with Japanese trust banks, custodians, brokers, vendors, and internal PIMCO teams
- Provide timely guidance and coordination on operational inquiries, issues and exceptions raised by internal and external stakeholders
- Act as a key liaison across Japan and global stakeholders to support operational execution and issue resolution
- Act as a key operational point of coordination with Account Management, Portfolio Management / Trade Support, and the Cash Desk across client flows, operational events, market activities, and funding requirements
Strategic, Regulatory & Market Practice Initiatives
- Lead and support implementation of new products, market expansion initiatives, and regulatory or market practice changes
- Support onboarding of new accounts, new markets, new operational processes, and operational change initiatives
- Ensure Japan market requirements are appropriately represented and incorporated into global initiatives and operating frameworks
Operational Risk Management & Control
- Maintain robust operational controls and proactively identify operational risks
- Coordinate issue resolution and remediation efforts across internal and external stakeholders
- Provide operational support for audit, compliance, and regulatory inquiries and reviews
Team Management
- Lead, coach and develop the Tokyo IMOps team while fostering accountability, collaboration and operational excellence
- Ensure operational stability, accountability, appropriate coverage, and succession readiness
- Support continuous process improvement and operational resiliency initiatives
Examples of Operational Coverage
- Oversight of key vendor partners,(outsourced middle office), operational activities across Japan structures
- Coordination and process alignment with Japanese trust banks, brokers, outsourced partners and internal PIMCO teams
- Cash and collateral management oversight
- Support for regulatory and market practice change preparation and implementation
- New market onboarding and operational process implementation
- Oversight of cash flows, subscription / redemption activity and operational support for Tokkin and pension account structures
- Working with Japan Client Operations on account openings / closures with trust banks, custodians, outsourced partners and internal stakeholders
Requirements & Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience working with Japanese trust banks, custodians, brokers and outsourced operational service providers preferred
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and develop practical solutions to complex operational challenges
- Leadership experience and ability to develop team capabilities and operational resiliency
- Familiarity with Japanese market practices, Tokkin and pension account operational structures, and regulatory requirements
- Strong stakeholder management and cross-functional coordination skills
- Ability to manage complex operational activities across multiple internal and external parties
- Ability to operate effectively under ambiguity and within evolving operational environments
- Experience supporting operational initiatives, process improvements, and regulatory or market practice changes preferred
- Demonstrated ability to balance local market requirements with global operating frameworks
