Patient Account Specialist
Grand Rapids, MI
We are seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Patient Account Specialist to support patient account management, billing, collections, reimbursement, and administrative functions across clinical services. This role serves as an important resource for patients, insurance payers, and care teams by helping ensure accurate account maintenance, timely claim processing, and exceptional customer service. Patient Account Specialist Key Responsibilities: • Maintain patient accounts including demographic verification, guarantor setup, insurance updates, benefit verification, authorization review, and account maintenance
• Ensure patients are scheduled with participating providers and appropriate payer information is recorded
• Contact insurance companies to obtain authorizations and resolve claim denials, payment discrepancies, outstanding balances, and other reimbursement issues
• Process failed claims and ensure claims meet clean claim requirements for timely reimbursement
• Support Medicaid and Medicare reporting requirements and maintain required patient agreements
• Apply patient payments accurately and monitor reimbursement compliance with payer contracts
• Prepare and balance bank deposits
• Respond to patient inquiries regarding account balances, payment options, and billing concerns
• Establish payment arrangements within established organizational guidelines
• Review delinquent accounts and initiate appropriate collection activities or agency referrals
• Administer and document Patient Assistance Fund (PAF) applications and transactions
• Maintain knowledge of payer regulations, billing requirements, and reimbursement guidelines
• Serve as a resource to clinical sites regarding insurance, billing, and reimbursement processes
• Provide administrative support including patient check-in and check-out, phone triage, appointment coordination, scanning, correspondence, and scheduling support
• Promote a professional, customer-friendly, and inclusive environment for patients, families, and coworkers
• Perform other duties as assigned
Patient Account Specialist Qualifications: • High school diploma or equivalent required
• Associate degree or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities preferred
• Minimum of one year of experience in a related field required
• Previous healthcare billing, collections, insurance verification, or patient account experience preferred
• Strong customer service and communication skills
• Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail
• Proficiency with computer systems and office software applications
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment
