Position Title:
Design Engineer III – Industrial Electrical Products
Position Description:
We are looking for a Design Engineer III to lead the design and development of industrial electrical products at Marathon Special Products, including terminal blocks, fuse holders, power distribution blocks (PDBs), and related accessories. This is a hands-on, high-impact role responsible for executing new product development from concept through launch. You will work closely with Product Management, Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing, and Quality to translate stakeholder and business requirements into robust, manufacturable designs. This role is expected to operate independently, drive technical decisions, and ensure successful product execution across the product development lifecycle.
Principal Duties / Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and development of new products from concept through commercialization, ensuring alignment with product requirements and business objectives, with ownership of the most complex projects
- Translate voice of customer (VOC) and application requirements into product designs, specifications, and performance targets
- Develop detailed engineering concepts and drawings for customer proposals, design reviews, and product manufacturing
- Lead design reviews, risk assessments (DFMEA), and validation activities to ensure product performance and reliability
- Develop and validate prototypes, including creation of test plans and driving design iterations to meet product requirements
- Lead and support agency compliance efforts (e.g., UL, CSA, IEC), including design considerations, documentation development, and interactions as needed
- Lead pre-production builds, pilot runs, and validation testing to ensure successful product launch
- Troubleshoot design, quality, and field-related issues and implement corrective actions
- Drive continuous improvement and product enhancement through post-launch analysis, customer feedback, ECRs, and design update
- Provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams and drive project execution across development stages
Interactions:
- Product Management: Align on VOC, product requirements, feasibility, and technical tradeoffs throughout the product development lifecycle
- Engineering Team: Assist in reviewing and providing feedback on other team members’ engineering deliverables such as design concepts, design problems, drawings, test plans, etc…
- Manufacturing & Operations: Ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and aligned with production capabilities
- Supply Chain & Sourcing: Support supplier selection, design reviews, and technical discussions to meet cost and quality targets
- Quality & Regulatory: Support compliance with internal quality standards and external certifications (UL, CSA, IEC)
- Lab & Testing: Coordinate prototype and validation testing and ensure accurate documentation of results
- Customers & Commercial Teams: Support technical discussions, application validation, and resolution of field issues as needed
- Cross-functional project teams: Contribute to project execution across key development stages, ensuring alignment on technical scope, risk, and timing
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in product design, product engineering, or a related technical role
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or a related field
- Strong drafting and mechanical design experience for manufactured products
- Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred)
- Experience with product validation, testing, and design verification methods
- Demonstrated success managing engineering projects, tracking milestones, and meeting project schedules
- Ability to work independently and drive technical decisions with minimal supervision
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to independently troubleshoot design and application issues
- Ability to make sound technical decisions and drive work with minimal supervision
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with low-voltage electrical components such as terminal blocks, fuse holders, or power distribution blocks (PDBs)
- Experience with UL, CSA, or IEC standards and product certification processes
- Experience supporting new product development in a structured process environment
- Familiarity with DFMEA, PFMEA, and design for manufacturing principles
- Experience working with global suppliers on product design and cost optimization
- Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis for mechanical or electrical simulation (Ansys preferred)
Work Type / Location:
Onsite in Bowling Green, OH with flexibility based on role requirements. Travel up to 10–25% as needed to support supplier visits, testing, and product validation.
