In this role, the Clinical Bed Coordinator will support patient flow and capacity management across the four Baltimore hospitals by coordinating patient placement activities, collaborating with operational and clinical teams, and identifying opportunities to improve throughput and patient access.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate all patient placement activities in support of safe, timely, and efficient patient flow
- Collaborate with nursing and departmental staff to facilitate patient placement, optimize bed utilization, and resolve operational issues
- Partner with Transport and Environmental Services teams to prioritize patient movement and improve throughput
- Work closely with regional Capacity and Throughput Managers to identify, develop, and communicate opportunities to enhance throughput and operational coordination
- Analyze throughput reports and operational metrics to provide recommendations that improve patient access and flow

POSITION SUMMARY
The System-Wide RN Clinical Bed Coordinator is responsible for coordinating patient placement and bed utilization across hospitals within the health system. This role collaborates with nursing leadership, physicians, MedStar transfer center, emergency departments, perioperative services, environmental services, and hospital-based Transport Departments to optimize patient throughput, ensure appropriate placement based on clinical needs, and maximize bed capacity. The RN Clinical Bed Coordinator serves as a central communication hub for patient flow and facilitates timely admissions, transfers, and discharges while maintaining patient safety and regulatory compliance.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responsible for coordinating patient placement and bed utilization across hospitals within the health system
2. Acts as a liaison between multiple hospital departments, MedStar Transfer Center and accepting physicians to facilitate the prompt and accurate assignment of patients into beds, resolve operational issues, and make recommendations to improve timely access to admission beds.
3. Works with nursing to determine availability of bed(s) on the units, balancing unit census, patient acuity, and staff availability to meet patient’s needs.
4. Works with EVS to ensure the patient room is turned over in a timely manner and cleaned upon the patient’s discharge. Works with other departments to secure any services and ensure their availability upon the patient’s arrival to the unit.
5. Assigns beds based on patient characteristics, unit scope of practice, room capabilities, admitting services coverage, and clinical need. A patient will be admitted to the preferred location of the admitting and teaching service if the other principles of effective placement are also met.
6. Responsible for oversight and coordination of bed assignments and ensures bed tracking systems are up-to-date and accurate with patient information. In partnership with Senior Director of Capacity and Patient logistics helps identify, recommend, and develops/implements quality assurance systems for improvement in access. Helps develop systems, procedures, and/or policies with the various departments throughout MedStar Health to facilitate communication and expeditious patient placement.
7. Works closely with Director of Patient Throughput and the regional managers of Capacity and Throughput to develop and present opportunities for improved throughput and communication of needs/challenges
8. Analyzes throughput reports and gives recommendations to improve service/access.
9. Attends daily safety and service line huddles to communicate bed availability and prioritize patient placement throughout MedStar Health.
10. Utilizes approaches and strategies that support and optimize patient throughput outcomes that are evidenced, based on the interdisciplinary plan of care and standards of IMOC.
11. Takes action to support the National Patient Safety Goals, nursing sensitive indicators, regulatory requirements and other identified quality metrics.
12. Informs direct supervisor, Director of Patient Throughput, and applicable entity leadership of significant events, problems, any corrective actions taken, and/or suggested approach. Provides written documentation/reports as needed.
13. Maintains own knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of nursing, nursing management, and bed management by reading literature and attending related seminars and conferences, when applicable and approved by leadership
