Description
Citi is looking for a Lead Back-End Java Developer (Apps Dev Tech Lead Analyst - C13) to join its Credit Risk Technology team, taking ownership of complex backend application development that directly supports risk management and financial decision-making at a global scale. In this senior individual contributor role, you will design and deliver enterprise-grade software solutions, set engineering standards, and guide a team of developers building the systems that underpin credit risk processes across one of the world's leading financial institutions. If you are a hands-on technical leader who thrives in a demanding, high-impact engineering environment, this role offers the scope and influence to make a real difference.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and deliver robust backend applications using Spring Boot, Hibernate, multithreading, and Oracle DB to support credit risk technology platforms.
- Define and enforce engineering standards for coding, testing, debugging, and deployment to maintain a high quality, production-ready codebase across the Credit Risk Technology team.
- Architect application solutions that align to the broader technology blueprint, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and alignment with enterprise and risk technology patterns.
- Conduct thorough code reviews and provide direct technical guidance to junior and mid-level developers, raising engineering capability across the team.
- Collaborate with multiple technology and business teams to identify system enhancements required to support new credit risk products and process improvements.
- Evaluate complex business and system processes to resolve high-impact technical problems, delivering solutions that meet both functional and regulatory requirements within a credit risk context.
- Assess risk in engineering decisions with careful consideration for system integrity, regulatory compliance, and the protection of client data and assets.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- 6 or more years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on Java backend application development and systems analysis.
- Deep practical expertise in Java, including multithreading, Spring Boot, and Hibernate, applied within large-scale enterprise application environments.
- Hands-on experience with Oracle DB, including design and query optimization within enterprise-grade systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead software delivery end-to-end, from technical design through to production deployment.
- Subject expertise in at least one domain of Java application development, with the ability to make independent technical decisions and guide others.
- Clear and precise written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical decisions confidently to engineering teams, risk managers, traders, and financial controllers alike.
- Ability to build effective working relationships across teams, influencing peers and business partners to achieve shared technical and delivery goals.
- Self-motivated and well-organized, with the ability to work autonomously and deliver quality results within agreed timeframes in a fast-moving environment.
- Comfortable working as part of a global team across multiple geographies and time zones, adapting priorities as circumstances evolve.
Beneficial Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience developing Java applications within a banking, financial services, or credit risk technology environment.
- Familiarity with credit risk concepts, risk data models, or regulatory reporting frameworks relevant to enterprise banking systems.
- Knowledge of rates or other financial derivatives products, or a clear willingness to develop expertise in this area.
- Exposure to architecture and infrastructure disciplines, with an understanding of how application design intersects with broader risk technology strategy.
- Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
What We Offer:
At Citi, you will join a global Credit Risk Technology team where your engineering decisions carry real weight. This role offers the opportunity to lead meaningful technical work, develop engineers around you, and build Java-based systems that operate at the scale and complexity of one of the world's leading financial institutions, directly supporting how Citi manages credit risk across its global business.
- A hybrid working model with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, supporting flexibility and productivity.
- Technical leadership visibility within a high-profile risk technology function, with the autonomy to shape engineering standards and influence how the team builds and delivers software.
- Opportunities to mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, growing your impact beyond your own technical contribution.
- Access to learning and development resources to deepen your expertise in both Java software engineering and financial risk technology.
- Exposure to complex, high-impact enterprise systems within credit risk, where your work directly supports critical business and regulatory operations.
- Competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including financial wellbeing, wellbeing support, and family-friendly policies.
Build the Java backend systems that power credit risk decisions at Citi. Apply today and bring your engineering expertise to a role with real global impact.
