The Nursing Simulation Lab Technician (Instruction and Classroom Support Tech 2) helps advance the equity-centered mission of the College and the Nursing Department. In collaboration with the Nursing faculty, the SIM Faculty Coordinator, and the Associate Dean of Nursing, the Nursing Simulation Lab Technician is responsible for coordinating the operation of the simulation laboratory in the Nursing department which currently includes LPT to BSN, Practical Nursing, Nursing Assistant, Emergency Room Technician, Cardiac Monitor/Electrocardiography (EKG) Technician and Phlebotomy. 


This position supports immersive simulation experiences and other scheduled patient simulation learning activities. This position has no responsibility for providing direct care to patients and will report to the Associate Dean of Nursing.

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical students, 15% Adult Basic Education student, and 3% Applied Bachelor degrees.  Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, Washington, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw.  Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students.   • In collaboration with faculty, provide classroom, and simulation support and setup including preparing and maintaining mannequins and related simulation lab equipment for all nursing programs. 
  • Provide technical support and supervise the use of equipment during simulation. 
  • Technical support, and supervision to open lab participants. 
  • Maintains current knowledge of simulation/lab equipment catalogs and operation manuals.
  • Assist students in the simulation lab by answering routine questions related to resources and equipment use. 
  • Assist students with lab, clinical, and practice sessions by answering routine questions related to learning aids/resources, equipment use (assistants may not do initial teaching, remediation, or evaluation of students). 
  • Prepares materials for use in classrooms and simulation laboratories, sets up assignments, equipment or demonstration materials for class and simulation labs; confers with instructor in establishing and developing assignments. 
  • Provides theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested.
  • Simulation Laboratory maintenance to include inventory and procurement of supplies, stocking, equipment repair and ensuring a clean and safe environment.
  • Maintain warranties and renewals for all equipment; perform routine equipment repair; schedule biomedical large item equipment repairs as needed. 
  • Troubleshoot problems which may arise related to simulation supplies and function. 
  • Perform cleaning tasks such as laundry, equipment sanitation, and dismantling simulated human fluid lines to prevent erosion and bacteria growth.
  • Track and use data for future improvements. 
  • Maintain accurate inventory of supplies to support instruction of the nursing programs. 
  • Develop, track and maintain Pyxis systems: Add users; add patients; add medications to formulary; Assign medications to Pyxis stations and create simulated medications. 
  • Stock and manage medication carts including the electronic medical dispensing and recording system. 
  • In collaboration with faculty, monitor lab usage, evaluate effectiveness of resources and aids provided.
  • Maintains and repairs all simulation equipment, including:
    1. Patient simulators, computers, monitors and a variety of medical equipment.
    2. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and contacts vendors as needed.
  • Process requests for nursing instructional equipment and materials necessary for the simulation laboratory in conjunction with faculty and the Administrators. 
  • Oversee simulation laboratory maintenance, safety, and handling of hazardous wastes. Maintain the secure storage of stericycle (needles) and when necessary, schedule for pick-up and disposal by biomed company.
  • Assess simulation laboratory space to ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other regulatory/accrediting agencies. 
  • Prepare and tear down of simulation lab/class activities. 
  • Work with faculty to schedule and coordinate simulation experiences with students. 
  • Operate equipment (Audio/visual software, cameras, video recorders, manikins, task trainers) and supplies. 
  • Work with faculty to setup and run clinical simulation scenarios including technical support during simulation activities.
  • Test equipment functionality prior to a simulation lab. 
  • Perform High Fidelity sim troubleshooting, refill fluids as necessary. 
  • Provide information/direction to students and faculty about simulation manikin capabilities as needed to support the simulation activity. 
  • Inspect, test, adjust, and troubleshoot simulation hardware and software, including ordering of parts as needed. 
  • Use a simulation scenario to determine Pyxis medication needs and the required setup for high fidelity manikins. 
  • In collaboration with vendors, keep up to date on new simulation software and hardware. 
  • Provides, schedules, and coordinates preventative maintenance of simulation and laboratory equipment according to manufacturers' recommendations and programmatic needs. 
  • Assist faculty in programming simulation software to meet course learning outcomes. 
  • Assist in developing simulations, documentation, and chart records to provide realistic clinical experiences for health students. 
  • Provide training and serve as a resource for staff utilizing the simulation lab and equipment. 
  • Serve as liaison to simulation vendors to trouble shoot technical issues and solicit training and assistance for program faculty and staff. 
  • Participate in simulation trainings for equipment use and management. 
  • Assist in the development, implementation and enforcement of safety policies and procedures in simulation classes and lab support areas. 
  • Develop and maintain a system for inventorying and ordering equipment and training materials to assure adequate supplies for each simulation lab. 
  • Conduct a weekly supplies check to assure adequate supplies for each simulation. 
  • Develop and maintain an organization system for all supplies and equipment in the simulation lab. 
  • Assist college teams with the development, implementation and evaluation of new and existing simulation programs. 
  • Perform simulation demonstrations for classes and visitors. 
  • Track student hours, number of sessions, and notes on sim activities. 
  • Data entry as needed to support program activities. 
  • Assist in data collection for program improvement. 
  • Basic computer, network or printer troubleshooting. 
  • Other duties in support of the lab and nursing program needs. 
  • Provide support to the Nursing Laboratory Technician as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School graduation or equivalent. 
  • Six months of demonstrated experience working with and knowledge of safe laboratory or simulation practices - or- equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Intermediate experience with word processing, email and spreadsheet software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AAS (Associate of Applied Science) degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Nursing, Information Technology, or related field. 
  • Teaching or training experience. 
  • Experience working in a community college. 
  • Working knowledge of basic medical terminology. 
  • Familiarity with simulation equipment to configure software and to build and maintain simulation mannequins.

WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Must have the ability to sit for prolonged period of time at a desk/computer workstation

  • Frequent repetitive arm, hand, and finger motions

  • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screen in performing work assignments

  • Work in an office setting with frequent interruptions

  • Must be able to maintain “regular and predictable attendance

  • May need to carry, lift or move equipment/supplies up to 50lbs

  • Work schedule: Flexible Hours (40 per week) to accommodate sim scheduling (typically Mon-Fri but does include infrequent weekends)
