JOB SUMMARY

The Utility Custodian performs repairs, service, and preventive maintenance of department equipment as well as performing the duties of a Housekeeper and/or Custodian when needed.  The position also functions as a utility person for a number of projects, and assists with on-the-job training of new custodians.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Disinfect patient treatment, invasive care areas, staff and visitor areas to maximize infection prevention, enhance patient safety, ensure EOC compliance and enhance the visual appeal of assigned areas in accordance with established policies and procedures. Perform collection, storage, and disposal of general medical, biohazard, pharmaceutical, chemotherapy, sharps, and soiled linen products from patient treatment areas in accordance with established policies and procedures. Clean remodeled or newly constructed areas and ensure they are ready for occupancy. Perform project work to include cubicle curtain changes, construction cleanup, floor refinishing, carpet cleaning, wall washing, refrigerator cleaning, and other projects as assigned. Prepare patient rooms, exam rooms and patient support areas for new patients including disinfection, bed making, floor care, and supplies replenishment in accordance with established policies and procedures. Interact verbally with patients and visitors to provide directions, hospital information, guest room services and general hospitality. Ensures the proper operation of and performs minor maintenance on all custodial equipment communicating additional repair needs to Environmental Services Supervisors. Support with internal requests for moving office furniture and other equipment as needed. Utilizes problem solving knowledge and skills to investigate problems and formulate solutions to improve safety, maximize growth, and reduce costs. Talk promptly and directly to an individual when there is a concern or a problem.  Build trust through open, two-way communication. Embrace change and take prudent risk to find new ways to support the Mission.  Encourage new ideas to serve our patients and communities.  Provide and accept coaching and feedback. Acts as a resource to other custodians for technical advice such as special stain removal, chemical applications and equipment concerns. Maintains documentation and performs data entry utilizing preventive maintenance and work   order software Performs record retention duties in off site and on site locations. Supports and abides by all health center departmental and safety policies and procedures. Maintains basic parts inventory. Attends training applicable to job performance enhancement well as competency and departmental meetings Able to work with little supervision.  Independently uses sound judgment to make decisions that best meet the mission and vision of the organization associated to the MercyOne North Iowa Environmental Services Department. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPAA regulations. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Cultural Beliefs. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.  Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Provide relief support for Linen Distribution by fulfilling the duties of a Patient Supply Distributor 1. Assist with winter snow removal

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education [formal]:

High school education or equivalent preferred

Experience:  Two years custodial experience preferred Special Skills and Competencies: Have the ability to effectively train other employees Good record keeping skills Organizational skills Mechanical aptitude

Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Mandatory Reporting: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse requirement within 6 months of hire and renews this requirement every 5 years.

Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
