Description

The Supervision Officer reports directly to the Shift Leader then to the Shift Supervisor, Supervisor, Facility Administrator, and ultimately to the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer.  The detention officer will directly supervise detention residents in their day to day programming with an emphasis on safety, security, and behavior control.

Work a schedule that will involve working weekends, evenings or nights

Supervise residents in program activities such as meals, showers, school, indoor and outdoor recreation and parental visitation

Complete the intake and orientation process of juvenile offenders into the detention center

Conduct frequent building and cell checks to ensure a safe working environment

Conduct searches as required to control contraband

Restrain violent youths as directed by the Shift Leader or other detention administrator 

Participate in required fire drills as directed by the Shift Leader

Perform housekeeping tasks as needed to maintain facility cleanliness 

Maintain daily activity logs and reports

Write detention discipline and or incident reports as required

Keep the Shift Leader apprised of any safety or security concerns

Job descriptions will primarily confine the officer to duties within the detention center; however, a Supervision Officer may be required to perform duties outside the normal job description such as transportation, community service or cleaning details.
Required: At least 21 years of age

Required: High school diploma or GED

Preferred:  Bachelor's degree within the Behavioral Sciences field (Criminology, Sociology, Psychology)  or at least two years of college in one of these fields

Preferred: 1 year experience working in some capacity with juveniles whether incarcerated or in the mental health or educational fields

Ability to perform in a mentally and physically demanding working environment

Desire to work directly with troubled juveniles

Capacity to effect positive change and be a superior role model

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle, feel and lift.  The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The position will require the ability to become trained in restraint techniques which involve Flexibility (ex: ability to bend at the knees and waist, ability to bend elbows and other joints), ability to place full body weight and weight of another on knees (into a kneeling position), ability to take a deep step back, ability to twist body at torso, ability to put body weight on one elbow and both knees at the same time, ability to move suddenly and quickly and the ability to assist others in a restraint.

Required: Pass a drug screen following a conditional employment offer
 

BACKGROUND CHECK

Required: Clean criminal history


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Required: Possess a valid Texas Driver's License and have proof of liability coverage
  • Required: Ability to be certified as a Juvenile Supervision Officer.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Required: Above average communication and writing skills
  • Ability to perform in a mentally and physically demanding working environment


Salary range is $23.29-27.81 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.
