Akron General is looking to add a Communications Clerk to its team of dedicated caregivers. In this role, you will be responsible for processing inquiries from callers dialing the hospital's main published telephone numbers and 800 line. You will operate the overhead page system as well as activate emergency page teams all while exemplifying excellent team and customer service skills. This is a very team-oriented department that supports all aspects of every area within the organization. Here, each caregiver relies on one another to help each other succeed and provide the best customer service possible.
A caregiver in this position works 12:30pm – 9:00pm, every other weekend.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Answer incoming external calls for the hospital's main phone number, 800 lines, as well as internal calls to the Operator, page lines, STAT, FIRE and other emergency calls using the Automated Operator System.
Operate both overhead page and the alphanumeric paging system for the pocket pagers, using the Automated Operator System and perform all emergency paging following hospital policies and procedures (e.g., Code Red, Code Adam, Code Black, Code Gray, Code Orange, Code Blue, Code Pink, Code Yellow, Code Violet, Code Silver, Code Brown, Code Green, CAT, NRP, Stemi, Stroke and Traumas).
Activate group pages for Unannounced Survey Visits (e.g., Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare/Medicaid, Fire Marshall, Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Department for Mental Health and Trauma Site Surveyors).
Provide patient information for customers, keeping in mind patient confidentiality and complying with HIPAA.
Assign pocket pagers and replace broken and malfunctioning pagers for physicians and employees.
Conduct monthly tests on the emergency group pagers for quality assurance.
Update physician and employee profile information in SPOK.
Complete activation code form after every emergency code activation, including Patient Medical Record Numbers.
Maintain high awareness level of mass casualty procedures necessary for the Telecommunications area to perform tasks outlined in the procedure manual for the department.
Input additions and changes to the on-call schedules.
Assist Nursing units and Physicians with on-call schedules and pages.
Assist with Info Desk coverage and patient mail look up.
Sort, distribute and process both incoming and outgoing mail and packages.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED
Experience with PC software applications such as Microsoft Office and the Intranet
Strong typing skills with a focus on speed and accuracy
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Previous operator console experience
Work Experience:
- Experience with PC software applications such as Microsoft Office and the Intranet as well as good typing skills.
- Previous operator console experience preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to either sit or stand for long periods of time, depending on the task at hand.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate telecommunications console.
- Requires audible speech and hearing, normal or corrected vision.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
