Description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

As part of a small, hardworking, and accomplished team of specialists, you will be responsible for translating engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into additively manufactured metallic hardware. This involves educating engineers/designers on design for additive manufacturing, creation of the print model, owning the manufacturing process, tracking work orders, addressing manufacturing issues, and continuing to work on improvements. You will work closely with operators, quality technicians, and engineering counterparts to support the processing of complex engine and components (i.e., thrust chambers, injectors, turbo pumps, etc.). As an integral member of the team, you will use data to drive process improvements, relay design improvements to engineering, and, in general, serve as a direct feedback loop between design and fabrication.

Special Mentions

  • This is an onsite role based in Huntsville, Alabama, supporting production floor activities to keep parts flowing.
  • Travel to other Blue Origin facilities is required for training. (Anticipated travel: 15% of the time)
  • Relocation assistance is provided
  • Occasional off-hours support of production operations may be required, onsite or via phone and online collaboration tools.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the development of Additively Manufactured (AM) components from concept to production using Laser Powder Bed (LPB) printing.
  • Define and deliver production print models using state-of-the-art software tools, a configuration-controlled process, and design for AM principles.
  • Demonstrate machine-specific workflows and software packages to improve additive designs.
  • Develop manufacturing work instructions that clearly define the full process from print to delivery.
  • Closely manage cost, quality, build sequence, and schedule of hardware throughout the entire manufacturing process.
  • Perform root cause analyses when non-conformances and escapes are identified, and deploy effective corrective actions.
  • Partner with engineers and designers to educate and influence design for additive manufacturing.
  • Participate in company process definition, documentation, and improvement teams covering manufacturing processes, business processes, production planning, lessons learned, and other standards as needed.
  • Travel to other Blue Origin facilities will be required for training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in aerospace or a similar industry.
  • Exposure to and understanding of laser powder bed fusion printing or a similar metallic AM process.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Ability to support production floor activities onsite in Huntsville, Alabama, including off-hours support when required, and to travel as needed for training.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Must be physically able to:

  • Support production floor activities onsite in Huntsville, Alabama to keep parts flowing.
  • Support off-hours for production if required.
  • Travel as required for training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience working in metallic additive manufacturing and design.
  • Aerospace and rocket engine development experience.
  • Proven experience developing and printing LPB hardware.
  • Solid understanding of design for additive manufacturing and support strategies.
  • Strong understanding of engineering concepts and design for manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience with CAD design (Creo), support design (Magics), and simulation packages (MSC, ANSYS).
  • Experience generating work instructions to build complex assemblies.
  • Experience creating, developing, and maturing processes to production readiness level.
