Description
SUMMARY: The Structural Design Engineer is responsible for the analysis, design,
and preparation of construction documents for reinforced concrete
structures supporting industrial and commercial facilities. This position
performs structural engineering calculations and develops designs for
slab-on-grade systems, elevated concrete slabs, foundations, walls,
columns, and other structural elements while ensuring compliance with
applicable building codes, industry standards, and project
requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - These duties are essential to fulfill the minimum requirements
of the position. Additional duties may be assigned.
• Design reinforced concrete structural systems for commercial, industrial, manufacturing, warehouse, distribution, and institutional facilities.
• Design slabs to accommodate heavy equipment, warehouse storage, forklifts, vehicle traffic, and concentrated loading conditions.
• Evaluate floor flatness, serviceability, crack control, shrinkage, joint layouts, and long-term performance of concrete slabs.
• Prepare structural calculations, engineering reports, specifications, and construction documents.
• Produce and review structural drawings using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
• Review shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, and respond to contractor questions during construction.
• Conduct site observations and assist with construction administration as required.
• Ensure all designs comply with ACI 318, ASCE 7, OSHA requirements where applicable, and local jurisdictional codes.
• Perform post-design services for troubleshooting and problem resolution.
Basic Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills,
and/or experience required.
Formal Education, Licenses, and Certifications Required:
• Must possess one or more of the following:
o Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a structural emphasis
o Professional Engineer (PE) license
Type and Length of Specific Experience Required:
• A minimum of (3) three years of structural engineering experience with a focus on industrial and
commercial concrete construction.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
• Demonstrated experience in the design of reinforced concrete structures and foundations is essential.
• Comprehensive knowledge in the following areas is required:
o Slab-on-grade design
o Elevated concrete slab design
o Reinforced concrete detailing
o Foundation design
o Structural load path analysis
o Deflection, vibration, and crack control
• Experience in designing slabs to accommodate heavy industrial loads, warehouse facilities, or manufacturing operations.
• Proficiency with structural analysis software, including RAM Structural System, ETABS, SAFE, RISA-3D, STAAD.Pro, or equivalent platforms.
• Experience using AutoCAD and Revit.
• A thorough understanding of the following standards and codes is required:
o ACI 318
o ACI 360R (Design of Slabs-on-Ground)
o ASCE 7
o International Building Code (IBC)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and consistently meet deadlinesis essential.
Physical Requirements and Environment:
• Extended periods of sitting, standing, and computer work while preparing engineering calculations, reports, and construction documents.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills for interaction with clients, contractors, project teams, and internal staff.
• Occasional travel to project sites and client locations as required.
• Regular movement through active construction sites is required, including walking on uneven terrain, climbing stairs and ladders, and accessing elevated or confined areas in compliancewith all safety requirements.
• Occasional lifting and carrying materials, equipment, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Exposure to outdoor weather, dust, noise, and other environmental conditions commonly encountered on industrial and commercial construction sites may occur during site observations.
