Description
This position is responsible for the overall planning, leadership, administration, and evaluation of licensed before and after-school childcare programs serving children in kindergarten through fifth grade. This position ensures a safe, developmentally appropriate, and enriching environment for all participants while maintaining compliance with state licensing regulations and departmental policies. The Director provides supervision, staff development, budget oversight, and strong family and community engagement.
Develops and implements childcare curriculum, programs, and activities that promotes a friendly and welcoming environment. Ensures a safe and stimulating environment to include an enriching educational programming with a focus on positive experiences and child outcomes. Operates and manages all aspects of a school-age childcare program, to include human resources, customer relations, quality control, and facility management ensuring compliance with all accreditations, legal, regulatory, licensing, and policy requirements. Conducts program evaluations; facilitates program changes to ensure compliance with state regulations, health and safety standards, and proper licensing for school age children. Ensures the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements are implemented. Oversees, implements, and maintains confidentiality of administrative functions for communicating medical or special care instructions to the appropriate staff. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with the Recreation Division Chief, associated program personnel, staff, and parents. Conducts meetings, communicates changes, reminders, or important information regarding the center or classroom to families and employees. Prepares newsletters and posts presented in a professional manner. Adheres to all licensing guidelines and rules for operation of childcare facilities. Ensures professional development and ongoing training for maintenance of licensing and relicensing of child-care center staff. Oversees program budget and other finance activities for child-care programs. Performs other duties as assigned. |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations relating to Federal and State childcare regulations.
Knowledge of the state regulations (COMAR) governing School Age Child Care.
Knowledge of theories and practices of behavioral therapy and child development.
Ability to lead and direct activities, manage time efficiently and keep records.
Ability to build strong relationships with children, families and coworkers.
Ability to handle conflicts, emergencies and challenges in a constructive manner.
Ability to create a safe, nurturing, enriching and engaging environment for children.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited high school or hold a GED. Additional college level course work in child growth and development, school age curriculum, and childcare administration.
One year of experience as a director in a childcare setting.
Must meet current Maryland Department of Criminal Justice Services (D.C.J.S.) standards for the position.
Possession of CPR/AED and Basic First Aid Certification
Special Qualifications:
Consent to chemical substance screening consistent with mandated Federal, State, and City guidelines and programs, to include random tests for the detection of drug or alcohol use.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum age - 21 years or older.
Physical/Mental Demands:
Must be able to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds. Must be able to bend or crouch to interact with children on their level. Must be able to stand for extended periods.
The work is sedentary and generally the employee may be required to speak, walk, stand, bend, and/or carry light items to include paper, books or files.
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
Balancing ability: sufficient to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
Feeling ability: sufficient to perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Dexterity ability: sufficient to pick, hold, or otherwise work, primarily with the whole hand.
Handling ability: sufficient to pick, hold, or otherwise work, primarily with the whole hand.
Hearing ability: sufficient to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to effectively receive detailed information through oral communication and distinguish between different sounds.
Kneeling ability: sufficient to bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
Lifting ability: sufficient to raise objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
Mental Acuity: sufficient to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
Reaching ability: sufficient to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Repetitive Motion: substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
Speaking ability: sufficient to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
Standing ability: particularly for sustained periods of time.
Visual ability: sufficient to observe recreation activities or facility operations, to effectively operate standard office equipment, ability to read and write reports, correspondence, instruction, etc.
Walking ability: sufficient to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or move from one work site to another.
Work Environment:
The work environment entails minimal discomforts that may be associated with an office environment.
Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires the need to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
