The Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Office of the Manager and Chief Engineer, is seeking a Claims Management Specialist in Honolulu. This position independently handles claims under BWS self-insured programs, including liability and automobile claims, from investigation through final resolution.


 What You'll Do

  • Investigate, evaluate, adjust, and settle liability and automobile claims under the Board of Water Supply's self-insured programs.
  • Respond to incidents, conduct site inspections, gather evidence, and determine liability and damages.
  • Coordinate with attorneys, insurance carriers, contractors, and other stakeholders to resolve claims and pursue subrogation opportunities.
  • Maintain claim files, prepare reports, process settlement payments, and support the department's risk management program.
  • Other duties as assigned for this position.

Special Working Conditions

  • Required to respond to incidents during off-work time (evenings, weekends, and holidays) when risk management representation is required.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four year college or university with a bachelor's degree.  

Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree. 

For example:
1. Four (4) years of professional work experience, in any occupation, may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.
2. Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional level experience) in claims adjustment may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.

The education requirement must be met at the time of application.  Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, proper documentation, e.g., a foreign credential evaluation (FCE), must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional work experience which involved investigating, analyzing, adjusting and settling claims of liability, property damage, and/or automobile cases for insurance companies and/or self-insured programs of government and/or major private organizations.

Applicable Skills:  
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of insurance claims adjusting.
  • Knowledge of risk management principles, concepts and practices.
  • Knowledge of claims investigations and settlement techniques.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and investigating methods and techniques.
  • Ability to investigate, evaluate, adjust and settle liability, property, personal injury, and automobile claims.
  • Ability to read and evaluate medical reports relating to claims for injury.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of claim data to identify issues and make recommendations for the adjustment of claims.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT: 
Possession of a valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
