• Ability to obtain a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with AED and First Aid Certification within 90 Days of hire and must be maintained throughout employment

This position requires successful completion of the following pre-employment requirements.

ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Recreation Assistant supports the daily operation of City of Tucson Parks and Recreation facilities and assists with the delivery of recreation programs, activities, classes, special events, and services for children, youth, adults, and seniors. Responsibilities include customer service, program and facility support, registrations and payments, recordkeeping, facility opening and closing, safety inspections, and coordination with participants, community partners, and other City staff.

Recreation Assistants may provide task-level assistance to non-permanent employees, interns, and volunteers but do not supervise employees.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answers phones, greets customers, and responds to questions regarding programs, memberships, reservations, facility schedules, fees, rules, and services. Processes registrations, reservations, memberships, and payments using recreation management, point-of-sale, and other computer systems. Assists customers with routine concerns and complaints and refers complex or sensitive matters to appropriate staff. Provides and distributes approved program, facility and marketing information.
  • Assists the Recreation Program Coordinator with planning, developing, and implementing recreation programs, classes, camps, and special events. Assists with program and event schedules, registrations, participant communication, supplies, equipment, activity preparation, and program evaluation. Prepares draft flyers and promotional materials and coordinates with appropriate staff for approved marketing. Assists with tracking program expenditures and identifying supplies and materials needed for purchase. Sets up activities, games, booths, and event areas and participates in department and community special events. Works with community partners and outside agencies and assists with senior services and meal programs when assigned.
  • Conducts routine facility inspections and identifies and reports safety, maintenance, and operational concerns. Submits or assists with work orders and follows up as directed. Monitors inventories of operational and program supplies and identifies restocking needs. Assists with room rental setup and breakdown and facility opening and closing procedures. Participates in emergency preparedness drills and follows established emergency procedures.
  • Provides information and assistance to participants regarding recreation programs, activities, and events. Encourages positive participant engagement and promotes a welcoming environment. Assists non-permanent/seasonal employees, interns, and volunteers with assigned program or event tasks as directed by the Recreation Program Coordinator. Assists with department, facility, and unit special events as assigned.
  • Maintains accurate electronic and physical records related to programs, registrations, attendance, participants, memberships, facility operations, and other assigned activities. Uses email, spreadsheets, recreation management systems, and other computer applications to enter, retrieve, and maintain information. Completes routine reports and documentation, including incident and accident reports, program information, and other operational records as assigned. Maintains records in accordance with established City and department procedures.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work locations and schedules may vary based on operational needs.

Job sites are located throughout the city, and hours vary Sunday through Saturday from 6:00 am – 8:00 pm.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Six (6) months post High School

Work Experience
One (1) year of relevant experience

Equivalency
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working in recreation, community services, customer service, special events, youth/senior programming, or a similar public-facing environment.
Experience using computers, email, Microsoft Office applications, registration/reservation software, or point-of-sale systems.
Experience processing payments and maintaining records.
Experience assisting with recreation programs, classes, camps, or special events.
Strong customer service, communication, organization, time-management, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple assignments.
