Job Summary:
Oversees substation grounding design activities by providing advanced technical guidance, supporting strategic planning, and developing and maintaining corporate engineering standards while collaborating across departments to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient design practices. Ensures departmental effectiveness and alignment with corporate objectives by serving as a subject matter expert on complex engineering issues and upholding LUMA Energy’s values, policies, and safety culture.Job Description:
Leads high-impact studies, research initiatives, and strategic analyses proactively identifying opportunities and developing well-support proposals.
Conducts comprehensive evaluations of studies, reports, contracts, legislation, and any other critical documentation to deliver informed recommendations that strengthen effective corporate decision‑making.
Evaluates and recommends standardized corporate procedures, policies, regulations, and engineering standards, develops and monitors activities that measure efficiency and productivity, and develops evaluation and control systems that ensure alignment with organizational goals, objectives, and quality expectations.
Leads and coordinates job‑related activities while actively engaging in cross-functional meetings, committees, and technical work teams to diagnose and resolve highly complex technical challenges.
Recommends resource structures and procedural revisions while supporting the supervision of departmental operations to optimize performance and achieve departmental results.
Supports program, project, and asset management teams in material planning and coordination for substation grounding work and maintains positive working relationships with leaders and cross-functional partners within and outside LUMA..
Coaches and develops mid-level and junior engineers to accelerate professional development and build organizational engineering depth.
Applies and reinforces safety standards established by applicable regulations, company policies and procedures, while actively promoting LUMA's safety culture to protect the integrity of personnel, equipment, and systems.
Interprets and applies utility standards, labor agreements and regulatory requirements; and reinforces company policies, procedures, and standards, ensuring robust compliance with all applicable laws, industry regulations, and internal governance requirements.
Participates in storm restoration tasks and assigned drills to contribute to the safe and reliable recovery of services.
Performs additional responsibilities aligned with senior‑level expertise and organizational needs, contributing to strategic projects, team development, and enhanced operational flexibility.
Additional Job Description:
Education
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited university; Master’s degree in electrical engineering is preferred.
Experience
8 years' progressive engineering experience performing functional role responsibilities along with the required licenses and certifications.
4 years' experience working in Utility Electrical industry.
Previous experience working in Substation is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to perform engineering analyses and manage assignments with limited supervision.
Additional experience may substitute for required education when it aligns with the competencies and knowledge necessary for the role:
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering may substitute when accompanied by a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in relevant engineering experience along with the required licenses and certifications.
Competencies (Skills)
Grounding System Modeling & Electrical Analysis: Demonstrates advanced proficiency in grounding system modeling and electrical studies using CDEGS, ETAP, and related tools, performing fault‑current analysis, step‑and‑touch voltage assessments, and soil resistivity evaluations aligned with IEEE grounding standards.
Engineering Evaluation & Technical Decision‑Support: Reviews, interprets, and validates complex engineering models, simulations, studies, and proposals, applying strong analytical skills to diagnose technical issues and recommend effective engineering solutions.
Performance Systems & Metrics Development: Develops evaluation methodologies, control systems, and performance metrics to strengthen efficiency, productivity, and quality across grounding and engineering analysis processes.
Collaboration & Facilitation: Facilitates technical discussions, team meetings, and cross‑functional coordination to promote alignment, knowledge sharing, and effective engineering problem‑solving.
Bilingual Technical Communication: Communicates complex engineering analyses, reports, and recommendations clearly in English and Spanish, ensuring understanding at all organizational levels and supporting informed decision‑making.
Licenses/Certifications
Required:
Professional Engineering License issued by the Puerto Rico Examining Board for Engineers, Architects, Surveyors and Landscape Architects.
Member of the Puerto Rico Association of Engineers and Surveyors.
Valid Driver’s License
