Summary

The primary duties of this position are operating computerized scales to determine the weight of the load and corresponding usage/tipping fees. The position collects tipping fees and monitors incoming loads to identify and categorize waste to direct haulers to the correct location for disposal. The position works in and outdoors at the landfill and in all types of weather, dirt, and dust. The landfill contains less than sanitary conditions.

Essential Job Functions

  • Manage each load entering the landfill.
  • Inspect and examine loads of waste entering landfill to identify and categorize waste.
  • Ensure special waste loads are accompanied by the proper paperwork and document loads accordingly.
  • Manually enter after-hours load tickets into the scale software system.  
  • Complete septage origin slips from septic haulers.
  • Direct driver to the proper area of landfill and/or deny entrance of unauthorized materials.
  • Operate computerized scales to determine the weight of the load and corresponding usage/dumping fees.
  • Calculate fees or fixed prices for each load/item.
  • Collect money and issue receipts.
  • Balance cash drawer and currency for daily closing report. 
  • Communicate with equipment operators over CB radio regarding any special waste loads, unloading assistance requested, and any pertinent information needed for the operators regarding incoming loads.
  • Minimal exposure to hazardous materials including accepting used sharps from landfill customers.
  • Educate customers on landfill procedures as well as provide education on recycling, landfill events, Oregon Paint Care, Oregon E-Cycles, and various other programs.
  • Field incoming phone calls.

Competencies

  • Ability to communicate clearly with customers and deal with difficult customers and situations.
  • Knowledge of basic cashiering functions including calculating fees, issuing receipts, and balancing cash.
  • Preferred, sufficient knowledge of municipal waste to properly identify items and determine acceptability.
  • Basic computer and phone skills.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.  Work both independently and in a teamwork manner with other employees.  
  • Required to attend cash handling classes and other training classes as assigned.

This position has supervisory responsibilitiesover0employees.

Work Environment 

This is an active role including extended periods of standing and walking.  Filing, lifting, carrying, and snow shoveling may be required. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, credit card terminals, and fax machines. This position works both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is also frequently required to sit, stand, walk, lift, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, twist and bend, and reach with hands and arms.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a Temporary Part-time position. Days and hours of work are Thursday through Saturday, 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m.

Travel 

Occasional travel is expected.

Required Education and Experience 

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent is required.
  • One year of customer service experience required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel is preferred.

Preferred Education and Experience 

  • One year cash handling experience preferred, but not required.

  • Prior to or on date of hire:
    • Able to complete a thorough employment and/or criminal history check.
    • Able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test (not required for all positions).
  • Final candidates will be required to provide official proof of college degree and certified transcripts(not required for all positions).
