JOB SUMMARY:  Provides care and associated clinical duties and responsibilities in a medical office setting within the scope of a Medical Assistant, under the direction of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Professional Nurse (RN), physician, or other authorized provider. Provides assistance or performs other duties as requested by the Director of Clinical Services.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Answers incoming calls for participating physician offices.
  2. Receives incoming calls, takes a complete and detailed message based on office specific requirements.
  3. Obtains pertinent information regarding the patients’ health history and documents key information about medications and present symptoms.
  4. Routes messages to the appropriate provider/office based on provider preference and phone room guidelines.
  5. Efficiently and effectively uses the EMR to document all patient calls.
  6. Completes phone call count sheet for accounting on a daily basis and forwards sheets to accounting on a weekly basis.
  7. In the case of an urgent or important message, effectively communicates directly with the office via use of inside phone line, overhead page, or hand delivery, to ensure timely delivery of the information.
  8. Works directly with the New Patient Liaison for new patient requests.
  9. Stays current OSHA and Infection Control requirements.
  10. Participates in staff meetings, in-services training and continuing education programs as deemed necessary by the Clinical Director or designee or the physician/provider.
  11. At the direction of the Clinical Director or designee, may float to other physician’s offices and cover telephones as needed.
  12. Adheres to all SDMG Security and Confidentiality policies and procedures in regards to all daily job functions.
  13. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills in all interactions and communications with patients and their families, co-workers inter and intra departmentally, and visitors.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.
  15. May be exposed to hazardous drugs. 
  16. Attends OSHA training upon initial employee orientation and annually completes an OSHA competency. 
  17. Ensures that referrals and prior authorizations are completed in a timely manner.

  

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: Direct relationship with patients/families, physicians/providers, co-workers and staff from other departments/services.


Requirements

  

Minimum Qualifications:

1. One to two years experience in ambulatory care, preferably in a medical office setting or similar setting.

2. Must be able to record and enter data accurately. Demonstrate verbal and written communication in a clear, concise manner.

3. Must be able to work well with staff and patients in a cross-cultural setting. 

4. BLS certificate required.


Physical Requirements:

1. Fine manipulation of the hands for frequent use of computer and telephone and occasional use of copier.

2. Must be able to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, squat and reach above the shoulder.

3. Repetitive use of the hands for simple grasping, pushing, pulling and/or typing i.e. keyboard, medical instruments.

4. Acute speech, vision, hearing and sense of touch and smell required.

5. Must have the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. using proper lifting techniques.

6. Must be able to work around health risks associated with being around ill patients.

7. Protective clothing is required i.e. gloves.
