Are you a creative, dynamic and people-focused senior journalist looking for a new leadership challenge in a bustling, multi-city newsroom?
CBC Saskatchewan is looking for an executive producer to lead our news operation. This is a fourteen-month full-time onsite role covering a maternity leave. The position can be based in either Regina or Saskatoon.
Reporting to the managing editor, the executive producer will lead our teams who gather and produce daily and enterprise news content across platforms, including video, digital, social, radio and television. In this role you will work alongside the executive producer of programming to steer our journalism and our storytelling to audiences on video, digital and audio platforms.
As such, we are looking for someone who is a champion both of great journalistic content and of the people who make it.
As the executive producer of news, you will oversee daily news coverage decisions and be the go-to person on journalistic policy and judgment. You will have experience leading teams covering all aspects of news, from breaking events to investigative projects, and will have a keen knowledge of legal risk management. You will ensure that all our work adheres to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices and that it upholds our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity.
You will be creative and innovative, working with the rest of the leadership team to develop new forms of storytelling on all platforms. You’ll approach your work with an open mind and a genuine curiosity, and you’ll be comfortable challenging assumptions and seeking out a variety of perspectives to better reflect our audiences and their stories.
You will be a strategic thinker: you are able to set direction and delegate effectively, but you aren’t afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work. You know how to balance out the daily demands with longer-term projects and strategy. You champion growing our audiences, using data to help us grow them.
As a leader, you are naturally collaborative, skilled at navigating conflict and change, breaking down silos and championing team success. You are a mentor at heart, and are deeply invested in developing a representative and inclusive culture.
You will be a developer of people, skills and careers.
Your responsibilities:
Alongside the executive producer of programming, oversee CBC Saskatchewan’s daily operations, focusing on daily, enterprise and investigative news gathering, digital and social publishing, and radio and TV news programming.
Provide editorial oversight to ensure our content is original, relevant and impactful, and elevates a range of voices and perspectives.
Make editorial coverage decisions that align with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices
Provide guidance on legal risk management.
Monitor audience and industry trends, and develop ideas and approaches for future opportunities.
Coordinate and oversee live and breaking news specials.
Oversee staffing and scheduling decisions.
Identify and develop emerging talent within and outside CBC Saskatchewan, and actively support efforts to improve the recruitment of candidates from underrepresented groups.
Your profile:
Demonstrated experience leading teams in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.
Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
A strategic thinker with a proven track record of executing on a vision.
Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long-term planning.
A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams, encourage creativity and embrace experimentation.
Demonstrated skills in talent recognition, development and retention.
Experience and commitment to developing content strategies to feature new voices and perspectives and to connect with new, younger and more diverse audiences.
A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Saskatchewan, and a deep and nuanced understanding of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
Strong people management skills with a keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of seven years of journalism experience.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
A mandatory Criminal record check.
