Overview
The Senior Medical Technologist is responsible for supervision and performance in an area of specialization in the laboratory; i.e., Hematology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Blood Bank.
Responsibilities
• Supervises one or more departments of the clinical laboratory.
• Performs all tests and examinations within the assigned department.
• Notifies and discusses abnormal test results with physicians.
• Assists in evaluating new procedures.
• Schedules tests that are considered special procedures.
• Assists in maintaining the quality control program.
• Keeps abreast of new technical and theoretical procedures and coordinates the continuing education of assigned staff.
• Provides assistance to technologists and technicians when problems arise.
• Maintains records and procedure files for the department.
• Participates in overall shift coverage for call-in and weekend duty.
• May perform duties of the Chief Technologist or Assistant Chief Technologist in their absence.
• May contact physicians to relay and discuss patient results.
• Depending on hospital policy, may be allowed to perform procedures without a physician's request.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
• Master's Degree from an accredited institution with a major in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences and, subsequent to graduation, at least four (4) years of pertinent laboratory experience, of which not less than two (2) years has been spent working in the designated specialty in a clinical laboratory; OR
• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, including successful completion of a program in a CAHEA-approved School of Medical Technology and certification as a Medical Technologist by a nationally certified agency, plus at least six (6) years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience, of which not less than two (2) years have been in a designated laboratory specialty; OR
• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited educational institution with a major in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences and, subsequent to graduation: • At least six (6) years of pertinent laboratory experience, of which not less than two (2) years has been spent working in the designated laboratory specialty in a hospital clinical laboratory with a director at the doctoral level; and • Successful completion of pertinent courses which, when combined with the foregoing experience, provide technical and professional knowledge comparable to that of a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology from a CAHEA-approved program.
Experience
• Four (4) years of pertinent laboratory experience with a Master's Degree, including at least two (2) years in the designated specialty; OR
• Six (6) years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience with a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, including at least two (2) years in the designated laboratory specialty; OR
• Six (6) years of pertinent laboratory experience with a Bachelor's Degree in a related science, including at least two (2) years in the designated laboratory specialty in a hospital clinical laboratory.
