Fire Sprinkler Designer
At Johnson Controls, our fire protection teams help design sprinkler systems that support safe, code-compliant installations and practical field execution for our customers.
Role Overview
The Fire Sprinkler Designer is responsible for preparing detailed Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings to support the efficient and effective placement of sprinkler products and systems. This role combines technical design work, hydraulic calculations, field verification, and close coordination with district contracting teams and installation crews.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed CAD drawings for sprinkler system placement.
- Interpret construction documents, building conditions, and architectural features to support accurate system design.
- Interpret and apply NFPA standards to sprinkler system design and layout based on building type, construction type, hazard classification, and architectural features.
- Design and layout sprinkler systems using specialized CAD software packages based on the AutoCAD platform.
- Coordinate sprinkler system piping with other building components.
- Perform hydraulic calculations to support system performance and layout decisions.
- Perform field checks of completed designs to verify accuracy before installation.
- Work closely with district contracting teams to understand customer contracts, design scheduling, and delivery needs for installation crews.
- Coordinate delivery of system materials to the job site to support the optimum installation start date.
- Mentor others in the accurate execution of sprinkler design using experience, proficiency, and product knowledge.
- Assist sales with design estimates as needed.
How You Will Do It
- Apply NFPA standards with care and consistency so the design reflects the building type, hazard classification, and project requirements.
- Stay close to the work by coordinating regularly with contracting teams, field crews, and sales to keep designs aligned with installation needs.
- Verify accuracy in the field and resolve design issues early to reduce rework and support smooth installation.
- Share knowledge and improve every day by mentoring others, solving problems with practical judgment, and supporting better project outcomes.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 1-5 years of fire sprinkler design experience.
- Working experience with AutoCAD, HydraCAD, Sprinkler Design Software, or equivalent sprinkler design software.
Nice to Have
- Ability to solve basic math problems including geometry and algebra.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, MSOffice, Sprinkler Design Software, and a hydraulic calculation program.
- Ability to interpret and apply applicable NFPA standards for Automatic Sprinkler System Layout.
- NICET Level III in Water-Based Systems Layout.
