The Director, Global Transportation & Logistics is responsible for developing and executing the company's global transportation, logistics, and outbound distribution strategy, ensuring the safe, reliable, cost-effective, and customer-focused movement of goods worldwide. This leader oversees transportation operations across all modes, outbound load planning, carrier management, freight procurement, logistics network optimization, and transportation technology enablement.
The role is accountable for optimizing freight spend, improving customer service, enhancing asset utilization, strengthening carrier partnerships, and delivering operational excellence. The Director will lead digital transformation initiatives by leveraging advanced analytics, AI, machine learning, and automation to improve transportation planning, visibility, decision-making, and supply chain resilience.
Working cross-functionally with Commercial, Customer Service, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Procurement, IT, and Finance, this leader serves as the organization's transportation subject matter expert and drives performance across a complex global network.
The estimated base salary range for this role is $195,000 to $220,000 with a short-term incentive target and long-term incentive plan. Final compensation will consider experience, skill set and business needs as part of Johns Manville’s total rewards offering.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and execute a global transportation and logistics strategy aligned with business objectives.
- Lead transportation operations across truckload, LTL, rail, intermodal, ocean, air, and parcel networks.
- Establish performance metrics, governance processes, and continuous improvement programs focused on service, cost, productivity, and safety.
- Build and develop a high-performing transportation organization centered on accountability, innovation, and customer focus.
Outbound Transportation & Customer Delivery
- Lead global outbound load planning, routing, scheduling, and carrier activities.
- Optimize shipment consolidation, equipment utilization, routing efficiency, and transportation capacity.
- Balance customer service requirements, cost, transit times, and network constraints to consistently meet delivery commitments.
- Improve on-time delivery performance while minimizing expedited freight and transportation disruptions.
Carrier Management & Freight Procurement
- Develop global sourcing and carrier management strategies.
- Negotiate transportation contracts, service agreements, and rate structures.
- Establish strategic carrier partnerships and performance management programs.
- Drive freight savings while maintaining service quality and capacity availability.
Network Optimization & Digital Enablement
- Lead transportation network optimization, mode selection, routing improvements, and logistics integration initiatives.
- Implement and expand Transportation Management Systems (TMS), visibility platforms, advanced analytics, and AI-enabled planning solutions.
- Utilize predictive analytics, automation, and decision-support technologies to improve forecasting, load planning, transportation visibility, and cost performance.
- Partner with IT and business leaders to build scalable transportation technologies, data governance, and reporting capabilities.
Financial, Compliance & Risk Management
- Manage global transportation budgets, freight forecasts, and productivity targets.
- Deliver measurable cost savings through sourcing, process improvements, technology investments, and network optimization.
- Ensure compliance with transportation regulations, trade requirements, and company safety standards.
- Develop business continuity and risk mitigation strategies for capacity constraints, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical events.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with Manufacturing, Customer Service, Procurement, Supply Chain, Commercial, Finance, and IT teams to align transportation strategies with business needs.
- Lead executive reviews of transportation performance, strategic initiatives, and cost management opportunities.
- Build strong relationships with carriers, logistics providers, technology partners, and key customers.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Engineering, Business, Operations Management, or related field required.
- MBA or advanced degree preferred.
Experience
- 10+ years of progressive transportation, logistics, and supply chain experience.
- 5+ years leading regional or global transportation organizations.
- Significant experience in freight procurement, carrier negotiations, transportation optimization, and budget management.
- Proven success implementing TMS platforms, logistics technologies, analytics solutions, and digital transformation initiatives.
- Manufacturing industry experience preferred.
