Job Description:
Summary
The Estimator I supports the Heavy Civil Estimating team in preparing competitive, accurate bids for roadway, highway, bridge, drainage, utility, and other infrastructure projects. This entry-level role is designed for a recent graduate who is ready to apply technical and analytical skills while learning Webber’s estimating processes, construction methods, and bid strategy from experienced estimators and operational partners.
Regular Job Duties
- Review project plans, specifications, bid documents, addenda, and other requirements to understand the scope of work.
- Assist with quantity take-offs for earthwork, paving, structures drainage, utilities, traffic control, and other heavy civil work activities.
- Gather and organize pricing for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and suppliers under the guidance of senior estimating team members.
- Enter quantities, production assumptions, and pricing into estimating software and help maintain accurate estimate files and supporting documentation.
- Solicit subcontractor and supplier quotes; organize bid coverage and assist with comparison and evaluation of proposals.
- Participate in estimate reviews, bid strategy discussions, pre-bid meetings, site visits, and bid-day activities.
- Coordinate with estimators, operations, project management, engineering, and other teams to validate project approach, productivity assumptions, and resource needs.
- Research historical cost data, current market pricing, and project information to support estimate development.
- Assist with preparation of bid forms, summaries, proposal documentation, clarifications, and submission packages.
- Track questions, RFIs, addenda, and scope changes during the bidding process and incorporate updates into assigned work.
- Support post-bid reviews and handoff of estimate information to project teams when work is awarded.
- Maintain organized electronic files and contribute to the accuracy of estimating databases and historical cost information.
- Build knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, safety expectations, contract requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Perform other estimating and preconstruction duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Internship, co-op, coursework, or project experience related to construction, estimating, engineering, or heavy civil infrastructure preferred.
- Basic understanding of construction plans, specifications, quantities, and cost components.
- Strong analytical, mathematical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Exposure to estimating, take-off, scheduling, CAD, or construction software is preferred; experience with HCSS HeavyBid is a plus.
- Ability and willingness to learn construction means and methods, estimating practices, and Webber processes.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a collaborative team.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines in a fast-paced bid environment.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites and meetings as needed.
