Group Design Manager

Our client is a well-regarded professional organisation who have successfully operated in the industry for over 25 years.  With their head office based in Yatala, this team of industry experts specialise in delivering high quality electrical design and construct projects across the commercial and industrial electrical sectors.

With a track record of delivering landmark projects, the company has secured multiple new large scale construction projects across Brisbane and the East Coast of Queensland.

To support the company’s growth strategy, we are recruiting for a Group Design Manager to lead the company’s engineering and drafting division.

Primary Objective

Reporting directly to the General Manager, this is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing all design engineering and drafting functions across the organisation.

The successful candidate will provide both strategic and operational leadership, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, commercially effective and compliant electrical designs that support successful project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the electrical engineering and drafting team across multiple projects and business units.
• Develop and implement design strategies, systems and processes that support business growth and project delivery.
• Mentor, coach and develop engineers, designers and drafters, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture
• Ensure all design deliverables are completed safely, accurately, on schedule and in accordance with Australian Standards and client requirements.
• Work closely with Estimating, Project Managers and Construction Managers to ensure seamless coordination between design and project delivery.
• Oversee design quality assurance, document control and compliance processes across the business.
• Drive innovation, standardisation and continuous improvement initiatives within the design function.
• Support tender submissions by providing technical expertise and value engineering solutions.
• Monitor resource planning, team utilisation and departmental performance to ensure efficient project delivery.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants and key project stakeholders.
• Contribute to the strategic direction of the business as a key member of the leadership team.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will be an experienced engineering leader with extensive knowledge of electrical design within the commercial construction industry. You will possess a strong technical background combined with proven leadership capabilities and the ability to drive continuous improvement across a growing business.

The successful candidate will bring the following skills, experience and attributes:

• Degree qualified Electrical Engineer or Trade Qualified Electrician with further engineering, design or management qualifications.
• Demonstrated experience leading engineering, design or drafting teams within the electrical construction industry.
• Significant experience delivering large-scale commercial electrical projects, including Design & Construct projects.
• Strong understanding of Australian Standards, electrical design principles and industry best practice.
• Exceptional leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Commercially minded with experience managing resources, project deliverables and design programmes.
• Ability to build high-performing teams through mentoring, coaching and professional development.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound technical and commercial decisions.
• Passion for continuous improvement, innovation and driving technical excellence.
• Professional, collaborative and hands-on leadership style with a commitment to quality, safety and company values.
