Description
- Maintains streets by repairing and patching as needed, including: streets, curbs, sidewalks, fences, gutters, and pipes which may include digging, setting forms, sawing, backfilling areas, laying asphalt, pouring cement, and removing snow and ice.
- Hauls asphalt, sand, gravel, and various materials.
- Performs routine maintenance and reports mechanical problems to supervisor or lead worker.
- Assists in preventative maintenance for flood control.
- Removes and disposes trash along main streets and drainage ditches. Cleans ditches, culverts, and storm water ditches.
- Mows, weed-eats, trims trees in streets, alleys, and drainage areas.
- Conducts general maintenance on vehicles and equipment to ensure proper and safe operation.
- Assists in carpentry layout work; builds and repairs fences.
- Operates specialized equipment such as dump trucks, sweeper, sander, front-end loader, snow plow, and skid steer.
- Directs or flags traffic around working crews.
- Assists other department as needed during emergencies.
- All other duties as assigned.
Experience in a similar role with a municipality, is preferred.
- Knowledge of general maintenance and repair techniques for streets.
- Ability to operate and maintain light equipment, power tools, and hand tools, including pick, jack hammer, tamper, level loop, chainsaw, roller, and sprayer.
- Knowledge of safe handling procedures of hazardous chemicals and materials, including hot asphalt.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, effective, and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all people.
- Ability to follow instructions, safety practices, and perform work accurately and thoroughly which requires performing multiple tasks simultaneously under time pressures and deadlines.
- Knowledge of city and departmental practices, procedures, and systems.
- A comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.
- Knowledge of and ability to correctly interpret, explain, and apply laws, rules, operations, practices, procedures, regulations, and policies.
- Ability to allocate and utilize limited resources in a cost-effective manner.
- Advanced ability to interact with people in a professional and congenial manner.
- Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.
Subject to be on-call during non-working hours.
Must be available to work during severe weather events.
