Description

Who We Are

Carnegie Robotics partners with industry leaders to design, build, and deploy hardened robotic solutions for complex real-world problems. Our work spans floor care, marine systems, logistics, industrial inspection, precision positioning, mining, off-road autonomy, minesweeping, and other challenging applications. Whether you are already passionate about robotics or are looking to find your niche in the field, Carnegie Robotics offers an environment where hands-on builders can grow and make an impact.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for individuals who are interested in the areas and technologies we work on every day. Experience is valuable, but curiosity, craftsmanship, and a willingness to learn are just as important. Our team includes engineers, technicians, and program leaders from a wide range of backgrounds, and we value people who want to build skills, share knowledge, and contribute across disciplines.

Technicians have opportunities to train on equipment in our machine shop, gain certifications, use CAD tools, and learn directly from engineers and senior technicians while developing their career path.

What You’ll Be Doing

As part of the Engineering Technician team, you will assemble, test, troubleshoot, and support electromechanical robotic systems and products. This includes off-road, military, and commercial vehicle platforms; aftermarket autonomy upgrades; custom electronics and enclosures; perception sensors such as stereo cameras and LiDAR; and test fixtures used to validate these systems.

You will primarily support first prototype builds and early engineering development. As designs mature, you will also participate in pilot builds, helping transition products from engineering into manufacturing.

Technicians are expected to bring practical fabrication ideas, apply electrical and mechanical knowledge to solve technical challenges, and provide feedback that improves product design, manufacturability, reliability, and overall quality.

What Your Day-to-Day Looks Like

  • Work alongside engineering teams to design, develop, install, test, and troubleshoot prototype systems, with a focus on early-stage development
  • Perform electrical assembly work including soldering, cable harnessing, electronics assembly, and electronics enclosure assembly
  • Complete soldering tasks that may include fine-pitch components, through-hole components, SMT components, ICs, and other electronic assemblies
  • Build cable harnesses and assist engineering with cable drawings, documentation, and build notes
  • Work from technical drawings and schematics, including Altium, EDA tools, SolidWorks, CAD models, and related documentation, rather than detailed step-by-step work instructions
  • Provide critical feedback for design improvements and help develop first-draft assembly processes
  • Recommend productivity improvements, identify tooling needs, and help maintain tools used by the team
  • Use electrical test equipment such as oscilloscopes, benchtop power supplies, multimeters, and related tools during system testing and troubleshooting.

What You’ll Have

  • Experience with PCB rework and cable assembly, with the ability to demonstrate these skills during the interview process
  • Knowledge of IPC standards for soldering, cable assembly, and PCB workmanship
  • Hands-on electromechanical build experience with strong troubleshooting ability
  • Ability to document builds, troubleshooting steps, repair findings, and feedback for engineering and management
  • CAD experience
  • Ability to lift more than 40 lbs

How You’ll Stand Out

  • Two-year technical degree or equivalent experience
  • IPC certification, or interest in becoming IPC certified and growing toward Certified IPC Trainer status
  • Genuine excitement for an environment where your title does not limit your opportunity to contribute, learn, and succeed
  • Strong ability to work as part of a cross-disciplinary team focused on shared goals
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and multitasking skills in a fast-paced engineering and manufacturing environment
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to support product testing, installation, or customer-facing work

What You'll Get Out Of It

  • UPMC health coverage with FSA or HSA options
  • Comprehensive dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Fidelity 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Free catered lunch every day with a vegan option
  • Free on-site parking
  • 31 days of PTO (including holidays)
  • Comp time for company travel
  • Three weeks of fully paid parental leave.
