Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Race Rock is seeking an accomplished Senior Substation Steel Engineer to join our Engineered Structures Division. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Engineering, you will lead the design and analysis of substation steel structures and help shape the engineering standards for the discipline. This is an excellent opportunity for a licensed PE who wants to take ownership of complex, high-voltage substation steel design.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform, review, and seal the design and analysis of substation steel structures up to 500 kV — tapered tubular A-frames, H-frame dead-ends, static masts, low-profile structures, bus supports, and switch stands.
  • Produce and check engineering calculations, drawing packages, and sealed deliverables.
  • Develop and apply design standards, methodologies, tools, and best practices for substation steel engineering.
  • Deliver assigned projects to meet schedule, quality, and budget targets.
  • Prepare and support proposal packages, technical scopes, and design estimates.
  • Partner with project management, sales, drafting, and manufacturing teams, and serve as a technical resource for utilities, consultants, and EPC partners.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
  • Active Texas Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain one within six months.
  • 8+ years of high-voltage substation steel design experience.
  • Expert knowledge of ASCE 113, AISC 360, ASCE 7, and ASCE 48.
  • Proficiency with STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, and RISAConnection.
  • Experience with structural steel detailing, bolted and welded connection design, and fabrication-drawing interpretation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop engineering standards and workflows.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Working knowledge of PLS-POLE, Mathcad Prime, and NESC.
  • Proficiency with IDEA StatiCa.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES OF THE ROLE:

  • Take ownership of complex, high-voltage substation steel design, with real influence on engineering practices and company strategy.
  • Work directly with the VP of Engineering as Race Rock invests to aggressively expand its Utility Structures division — with the ambition to quadruple division revenue in the coming years.

WHY RACE ROCK?

  • Opportunity to join a well-established business with a strong reputation and customer base.
  • Work directly with the Vice President of Engineering within an already thriving in-house engineering department, with meaningful technical influence and a significant impact on future strategy for the overall business.
  • The business has the ambition and investment to quadruple the Utility division revenue in the coming years.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus performance-based bonus eligibility.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Professional development support, including PE license renewal and continuing-education reimbursement.
  • Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate.

Some travel may be required. Employment is contingent on successful completion of pre-employment screening. Race Rock is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
