  • Unique access to world-class, customized facilities specific to high impact energy research, technology generation, and patent development.
  • Participation in novel fundamental and applied alloy development with direct economic impact on national and global energy infrastructure.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Characterization using advanced microscopy techniques (SEM, EDS, EBSD, EPMA).
  • Computational design and characterization of novel slags containing rare earth element byproducts for use during electroslag remelting of Nickel-based superalloys and steels.
  • Evaluate compositions of slags from computational simulation results.
  • Write technical reports outlining results of lab testing.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Material Science and Engineering or related field with 6+ years related experience or a PhD in Material Science and Engineering or related field with 4+ years related experience.
  • Experience characterizing microstructures of structural materials using advanced techniques (SEM, EDS, EBSD, and potentially EPMA).
  • Ability to produce technical reports, journal articles, prepare and present at professional conferences.
  • Experience with data analysis relating microstructure-chemistry-property relationships.
  • Understand microstructure-property relationships in nickel and iron-based alloys.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision, and ability to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact with people with a variety of expertise.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Material Science and Engineering or related field
  • Knowledge and experience with electroslag remelting.
  • Characterization of slag materials from melting processes.
  • Computational design using thermodynamic simulation software such as Thermo-Calc and FactSage.
  • Background in alloy design and development.
  • Excellent record of peer-reviewed quality publications.
