Description
Leidos is seeking a Material Scientist - Electroslag Remelting to join our team in Albany, OR to work with a distributed, multidisciplinary team on development of novel slags containing rare earth element byproducts for use during electroslag remelting (ESR) of steels and Nickel-based superalloys. The candidate should possess knowledge of and practical experience with conducting research on slag development and electroslag remelting. The position will be 100% onsite research and development support for the NETL R&D facility in Albany, OR. This work will involve a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technically-oriented national laboratory team, participation alongside other data scientists, engineers, geologists, and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Characterization using advanced microscopy techniques (SEM, EDS, EBSD, EPMA).
- Computational design and characterization of novel slags containing rare earth element byproducts for use during electroslag remelting of Nickel-based superalloys and steels.
- Evaluate compositions of slags from computational simulation results.
- Write technical reports outlining results of lab testing.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Material Science and Engineering or related field with 6+ years related experience or a PhD in Material Science and Engineering or related field with 4+ years related experience.
- Experience characterizing microstructures of structural materials using advanced techniques (SEM, EDS, EBSD, and potentially EPMA).
- Ability to produce technical reports, journal articles, prepare and present at professional conferences.
- Experience with data analysis relating microstructure-chemistry-property relationships.
- Understand microstructure-property relationships in nickel and iron-based alloys.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision, and ability to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact with people with a variety of expertise.
- Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Material Science and Engineering or related field
- Knowledge and experience with electroslag remelting.
- Characterization of slag materials from melting processes.
- Computational design using thermodynamic simulation software such as Thermo-Calc and FactSage.
- Background in alloy design and development.
- Excellent record of peer-reviewed quality publications.
Salary Range for this position: $115K to $125K
