Job Summary:

Leads and coordinates the drafting team by developing staff capabilities and producing high-quality engineering drawings that meet documentation standards and support collaboration with engineers and project managers. Applies advanced drafting techniques to interpret field notes, sketches, and engineer instructions, ensuring accurate, reliable outputs that strengthen project deliverables and drive continuous improvement within the drafting function.

Job Description:

  • Supervises the drafting team by providing direction, coaching, and technical support; coordinates and assigns workloads to meet project schedules, quality standards, and budget requirements; and monitors performance to identify development needs and coordinate training in drafting tools, design standards, and best practices.

  • Reviews the preparation, revision, and quality control of engineering drawings—including substation site plans, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and equipment details—and ensures all drafting outputs comply with company standards, engineering requirements, industry codes, and applicable regulatory guidelines.

  • Collaborates with substation engineers to interpret design requirements and translate them into accurate, complete drafting outputs, and reviews project documentation to provide feedback that ensures consistency, clarity, and alignment with engineering intent.

  • Supports estimating drafting hours, developing project deliverables, and assisting project managers by providing accurate schedule updates.

  • Receives instructions from the Manager and completes assigned work, which is reviewed upon completion to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Monitors and guides team compliance with organizational standards and legal requirements to minimize risk and ensure operational integrity.

  • Participates in and ensures team participation in critical restoration tasks and drills following storms and/or emergencies to maintain service continuity and operational safety.

  • Executes and delegates additional responsibilities based on team and business needs to ensure continuity and responsiveness in operational responsiveness.

Additional Job Description:

Education

  • Certification or Associate’s degree in Drafting from a technical college or university.

Experience

  • 4 years' experience in a similar functional role, with at least 2 years in a lead or specialist role, overseeing employees directly or indirectly.

  • 8 years of progressively responsible drafting experience in electrical, civil, or structural engineering environments, preferably within utility or substation design.

  • Demonstrated experience preparing detailed engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, layout plans, and structural details using AutoCAD or comparable CAD platforms.

  • Technical Drafting & CAD Proficiency: Demonstrates strong drafting expertise for substation design, including accurate engineering drawings, advanced drawing techniques, drafting‑related calculations, and proficiency in AutoCAD, CAD systems, BIM, and 3D modeling tools.

  • Engineering Standards & Quality Compliance: Applies knowledge of engineering standards, codes, and regulatory requirements while maintaining accuracy, organization, and a commitment to continuous improvement across all drafting outputs.

  • Field Verification & Safety Practices: Performs field verification and data validation effectively and safely operates light motor vehicles to support site assessments and accurate design documentation.

  • Team Leadership & Work Coordination: Provides leadership, coaching, and guidance to drafting teams while effectively planning workloads and coordinating tasks to meet project schedules, quality expectations, and budget requirements.

  • Communication & ProblemSolving Skills: Interprets engineering notes, sketches, and field data with clarity and collaborates effectively with others, applying strong communication, decision‑making, and problem‑solving abilities.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Active Draftsmen License issued by the Board of Examiners of Professional Draftsmen of Puerto Rico.

  • Valid Puerto Rico driver’s license.

  • Membership of the College of Professional Draftspersons of Puerto Rico, preferred.
